National Grid is hiring a UX Designer to join our Technology team.

This role can be based at our Warwick, Bristol, or Cardiff offices.

This role operates under a hybrid working model.

You’ll also have access to our London co-working space if that fits your working pattern.

You’ll play a key role in designing intuitive, user-centred digital experiences that make a real impact across National Grid.

Working closely with Product Owners, Developers, and stakeholders, you’ll turn complex challenges into simple, accessible, and engaging solutions that deliver value for our users and business.

About The Role

We’re looking for a talented UX Designer to create intuitive, engaging, and impactful digital experiences that make a real difference to our users.

You’ll play a key role in shaping how people interact with our products, turning complex challenges into seamless, user-centred solutions that balance customer needs with business goals.

Working as part of a collaborative Agile/Scrum team, you’ll partner closely with Product Owners, Product Managers, Developers, and other stakeholders to bring ideas to life.

From uncovering user needs and defining user journeys, to creating wireframes, interactive prototypes, and polished high‑fidelity designs, you’ll influence every stage of the product lifecycle.

Using industry‑leading design tools, you’ll craft visually compelling and highly functional experiences that are simple, intuitive, and enjoyable to use.

  • What You’ll Do
  • Create intuitive, engaging, and accessible digital experiences across web and mobile platforms, ensuring every interaction delivers value for users and supports business objectives.
  • Lead the design process from concept to delivery, transforming ideas and requirements into user journeys, wireframes, mock‑ups, and interactive prototypes.
  • Conduct user research and discovery activities, including persona development, journey mapping, and competitor analysis, to uncover insights and inform design decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Product Managers, Developers, and stakeholders in a cross‑functional Agile environment to shape innovative digital solutions.
  • Champion the voice of the customer throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring user needs remain at the centre of product planning, design, and delivery.
  • Test and validate design concepts through usability testing, A/B testing, customer feedback, and data analysis, using insight to continuously improve the user experience.
  • Rapidly iterate designs based on research findings, stakeholder feedback, and evolving business priorities, delivering solutions that are both effective and user‑friendly.
  • Help develop and maintain design systems, standards, and best practices to create consistent, scalable experiences across our digital products.
  • Ensure all designs meet accessibility requirements and align with brand guidelines, delivering inclusive experiences for a diverse range of users.
  • Actively contribute to Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, retrospectives, and PI planning, helping drive successful product delivery.
  • Partner with Product Owners to refine requirements, prioritise UX activities, and ensure design considerations are embedded within the product roadmap.
  • Present and communicate design concepts, prototypes, and recommendations with confidence, influencing stakeholders and building alignment across teams.
  • Stay ahead of emerging UX/UI trends, tools, and technologies, bringing fresh thinking and innovative ideas to enhance our products and ways of working.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve design processes, challenge conventional thinking, and raise the bar for user experience across the organisation.

You combine creativity with problem‑solving, using research, insight, and strong design principles to turn complex challenges into intuitive, engaging solutions.

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring

  • Experience using modern design tools such as Figma and other industry‑leading UX/UI platforms.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates your user‑centred design approach, showcasing wireframes, prototypes, visual designs, and successful web or mobile experiences.
  • A solid understanding of user research, usability testing, and data‑driven design, with the ability to translate insights into meaningful improvements.
  • Expertise in UX and UI design, including interaction design, information architecture, visual design, and accessibility best practices.
  • The ability to create compelling wireframes, prototypes, and high‑fidelity designs that clearly communicate ideas and solutions.
  • An appreciation of front‑end development principles and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams to bring designs to life.
  • Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to present, explain, and champion your design decisions.

  • Competitive Salary: circa £55,000 - £70,000 per annum (based on capability, and experience)
