Are you an electrical engineer looking to work on some of the most innovative energy infrastructure projects in Europe?

At National Grid Ventures (NGV), we're delivering the next generation of interconnectors and offshore hybrid assets that will connect renewable energy, strengthen energy security and support the transition to net zero.

As an HVDC Protection and Control Engineer, you'll play a key role in shaping the systems at the heart of our future converter stations. You'll work on major strategic projects, including LionLink, a pioneering development connecting the UK to offshore wind generation in the Netherlands and onward to the Dutch onshore grid.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop specialist expertise in HVDC technology while working alongside industry-leading engineers, international partners and global technology suppliers.

What you'll do

As an HVDC Protection and Control Engineer, you'll support the specification, design assurance and delivery of protection and control systems across major infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the development and assurance of protection and control requirements from concept through to delivery.
  • Working with OEMs to demonstrate compliance with GB Grid Code requirements, National Grid standards and project specifications.
  • Reviewing designs, studies, reports and technical proposals, helping to resolve engineering challenges throughout project delivery.
  • Supporting critical interfaces across converter technology, grid connection, cable, civil and wider project teams.
  • Participating in factory acceptance testing, site testing, commissioning and installation support activities.
  • Supporting the integration of protection, control, communications and auxiliary systems.
  • Contributing technical expertise to tender evaluations and future technology selections.

What you'll need

We're looking for engineers who are curious, collaborative and excited by the opportunity to develop expertise in a specialist area that is central to the energy transition.

You'll ideally have:

  • A degree, or equivalent experience, in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Control Systems or a related discipline.
  • A genuine interest in power transmission, renewable energy integration or major infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of HVDC technology, protection and control systems, substations or electrical systems (desirable but not essential).
  • The ability to analyse technical information and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to learning.
  • A collaborative mindset and the confidence to contribute within a supportive engineering team.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £64,000 - £76,000 per annum – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
