National Grid is hiring a Scrum Master for our Electricity Distribution (NGED) department. We offer flexibility regarding your location; however, you will need to be onsite at either our Bristol, Warwick or Plymouth office for our quarterly planning meetings.

About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Agile Delivery, the Scrum Master is responsible for embedding and facilitating the effective implementation of agile principles and practices across teams, fostering a collaborative environment that enables self‑organising and cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality digital products at pace. This role champions Agile frameworks including Scrum and Kanban, ensuring the team adheres to Agile values and processes. As well as working closely with the product management team to ensure that the work progresses on schedule and to the desired level of quality.

The Scrum Master also acts as a coach and mentor to teams and stakeholders, promoting continuous improvement, agile mindset, and adaptive planning throughout the product lifecycle. Operating in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment, this role demands exceptional ownership and accountability for delivery outcomes within the scrum team. The Scrum Master must navigate competing priorities, tight deadlines, and evolving requirements while maintaining team momentum and stakeholder confidence through clear, executive‑level communication.

This role is also expected to be a subject matter expert in their respective discipline, fostering collaboration, continuous improvement, and adaptability within the organisation, as a facilitator, mentor, and enabler of Agile principles. A person who advocates for a culture of agility, encouraging all to embrace Agile values and practices. The role also has accountability to deputise for their line manager (whenever necessary) and is expected to support the Scrum Master community while also driving a positive culture (primarily through role modelling) across the Technology department and wider business.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives and implement Agile best practices and frameworks, ensuring an incremental, iterative delivery approach.
  • Support the development team in refining and improving estimation and planning practices, such as user story sizing and sprint forecasting.
  • Lead and support the development team to remove risks, impediments and manage dependencies associated with delivery timelines and product quality, driving a balance between rapid iteration and long‑term product sustainability.
  • Support the product owner in maintaining a well‑organised product backlog.
  • Ensure the development team is clear on priorities, the definition of 'done' and alignment between teams and stakeholders.
  • Embed agile tooling best practices and instil this discipline within teams for enhanced efficiency, effectiveness and performance analytics.
  • Monitor and track team performance, sprint progress, and velocity to provide transparent updates to stakeholders and improve development team performance and delivery.
  • Foster a collaborative and self‑organising team culture, encouraging team members to take ownership of their work.
  • Foster strong collaboration and communication with stakeholders, from development team members to leaders, through clear and tailored messaging that adapts to the audience.
  • Regularly present sprint outcomes, delivery metrics, and strategic roadmaps to senior stakeholders and executive leadership, translating technical progress into business value and managing expectations in high‑stakes environments.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement by organising retrospectives and promoting actionable insights across IT&D and the wider business.
  • Act as a mentor and develop people within the development teams by coaching, mentoring, training and supporting them in their key skills, accountabilities and development areas.
  • Be a crucial part of the Scrum Master community sharing knowledge and best practices to create a high performing centre of excellence (CoE).
  • Facilitate cross‑team coordination to ensure efficient product delivery, especially when working in a scaled Agile environment (PI Planning).
  • Take full ownership and accountability for sprint delivery outcomes, proactively identifying and escalating risks, and driving the team to meet commitments in a demanding, results‑oriented environment.
  • Develop and maintain deep understanding of the product architecture, platform capabilities, technical dependencies, and how different system components integrate to deliver business value.
  • Take ownership of own personal development and career progression.
  • Identify, own and manage the risks involved in running our business appropriate to my role, in line with the company risk framework.
  • Champion the agile frameworks (Scrum and Kanban) within the team, ensure that Agile principles are practiced by peers and understood by stakeholders.
  • Undertake other duties from time to time as required by the Head of Agile Delivery.

About You

  • Strategic Thinker: Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to define a clear product vision and roadmap.
  • User‑Centric Mindset: Passion for creating outstanding user experiences and deep understanding of user needs.
  • Technical Knowledge: Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and modern software development practices including CI/CD pipelines, microservices architecture and DevOps principles. Must demonstrate proven track record of working directly with development teams building cloud‑native applications and possess deep understanding of software development lifecycle and technical debt management. Familiarity with digital technologies, agile methodologies, and project management tools.
  • Agile Expertise: Deep, comprehensive knowledge of Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) with demonstrated mastery of Agile principles, ceremonies, and best practices. Must have extensive experience implementing and optimizing Agile methodologies across multiple.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with good interpersonal skills to effectively convey ideas and updates to diverse stakeholders. Ability to present complex technical concepts and delivery status to C‑level executives and senior stakeholders, with proven experience influencing strategic decisions through data‑driven insights and compelling narratives.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire cross‑functional teams (coaching, training, facilitating and collaborating).
  • Problem‑Solving: Exceptional problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities, with a focus on data‑driven solutions.
  • Adaptability: Proven ability to thrive in fast‑paced, rapidly changing, high‑pressure environments with competing priorities, tight deadlines, and rapidly changing requirements. Must demonstrate resilience, composure under pressure, and capability to maintain team performance during critical delivery phases.
  • Ownership & Accountability: Demonstrated track record of taking full ownership of delivery outcomes, proactively managing risks, and holding teams accountable to commitments while fostering a culture of responsibility and continuous improvement.
