National Grid touches the lives of almost everyone, with an energy network that stretches across the Atlantic. We’re an international team, and our work underpins the lives of millions of people. Feet forwards, head up, and eyes bright, we’re working hard to create value for people today – and shape the future of energy tomorrow. In the UK, we don’t generate or sell energy – we join the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

The world of energy is changing beyond recognition. Working at National Grid, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in the UK – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

The role will be based out of our Warwick or Strand, London office; we operate a hybrid working policy, and a typical working pattern would be three days per week in Warwick, London or another office/site, with the rest of the week flexible.

About the role: The energy system will continue to change rapidly and fundamentally on the path to net zero in 2050. National Grid is at the heart of these changes, which poses strategic questions for us as a business and for the wider sector. We need to move at pace and reform our energy system – to deliver energy security, to tackle climate change and to protect our people. Group Strategy, Innovation and Market Analytics (SIMA) leads on answering high-level strategic questions for National Grid and working with external stakeholders to collectively answer broader questions for the whole industry.

As a senior analyst within the Market Analytics team, you will be part of a team that navigates future pathways for SIMA and the business by quantifying risks and opportunities for National Grid. The team combines the latest market intelligence, deep energy sector expertise and sophisticated modelling tools to provide insights that matter right across the business. We provide a trusted view on energy markets outlook and share insights that help the business to make informed commercial and strategic decisions.

What you’ll do:

  • Play a leading role in shaping the Strategic Energy Planning Framework, delivering insights across key programmes, including SSEP and CSNP.
  • Analyse market data to draw inferences and present results in a clear and understandable format to senior management and key stakeholders.
  • Design and develop data dashboards and employ sophisticated analytics, machine learning, and/or statistical methods to bring data to life.
  • Lead socio-economic cost benefit analysis to support the Electricity Transmission business in their decision‑making process for new projects.
  • Partner with project directors to develop robust investment cases for major transmission infrastructure projects providing economic insight.
  • Model GB & European power markets to inform commercial strategy, investment decisions, business planning and new business opportunities.
  • Develop and enhance Market Analytics’ in‑house market models, ensuring they are fit for purpose. Articulate and explain market model inputs/outputs to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of European Power Market Scenarios, contributing tools and analysis to assess supply‑demand dynamics.
  • Mentor and develop new and junior team members, supporting capability growth.

About you: Demonstrated inter‑personal skills and ability to influence others, work collaboratively and constructively with project partners, external stakeholders, and internal teams to achieve consensus and positive outcomes. Ability to translate model outputs into business insight and articulate impact on investment cases. Self‑motivated, entrepreneurial, and responsible individual. An understanding of the process in which future electricity network infrastructure is recommended by the Electricity System Operator is desirable. Fluency in Excel with additional Python, Machine learning tools and techniques, VBA or other programming skills (desirable but not essential). Familiarity with Power BI or other data visualization/dashboard development packages. Experience developing & employing market models. Previous experience with commercial production cost modelling software, such as: PLEXOS, BID3, etc. is a plus.

We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace for all. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates – we make appointments purely on merit, assessed against objective selection criteria. We support flexible working and will make reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process should you have any physical or mental impairment which may affect your ability to participate in the process.
