Job Purpose

The GB energy system is rapidly evolving towards Clean Power by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050, with the distribution network playing a crucial role in accommodating electric vehicles, heat pumps, and renewable energy sources. National Grid DSO is at the forefront of this transformation, planning the future distribution network and developing flexibility markets to ensure a safe and cost-effective system for consumers.

We are looking for a skilled individual to join our DSO senior leadership team as Head of Flexibility Markets. In this role, you will focus on building competitive markets for reliable flexibility services, developing commercial propositions, and leading a team to grow market scale and engage with flexibility service providers. You will collaborate with key internal stakeholders and develop strategies for external engagement, reporting to the Managing Director of DSO as part of the senior leadership team.

What you’ll do

  • Responsible for the delivery of the Market Development DSO role, including the delivery of the Ofgem baseline requirements and their reporting as part of the ED2 price control and DSO incentive.
  • Lead and develop your team, covering both the engineering and commercial sides, to deliver key outcomes to time and budget. This includes, but is not limited to the DSO strategic action plan.
  • Set out and then deliver against a Flexibility Market Development Strategy, whilst feeding into the broader NGED DSO strategy.
  • Maintain compliance with key licence conditions such as condition 31E, including all associated reporting.
  • Conversion of technical network needs into commercial proposals, including the volume of need and the price. This must manage the technical risks whilst providing value to the end consumer.
  • Continuous development of the processes and systems used for the procurement of flexibility services at scale. Processes must manage hundreds of thousands of assets, across hundreds of zones, with transitions happening daily.
  • Work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure coordination across the market to ensure that commercial offerings remain attractive. This includes shaping and then implementing key alignment activities driven by the Open Network project/Market Facilitator.

About you

  • Extensive expertise in the development and operation of flexibility markets.
  • Strong commercial background to create effective propositions that manage technical and commercial risks.
  • Confidence in leading a mixed technical and commercial team, providing clear direction and focus.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working collaboratively across teams.
  • Solid understanding of how to benefit the end consumer and engage with the wider industry for proper incentivization.
  • Passionate about delivering efficient markets and driving innovation.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience as a flexibility market participant or strong understanding of the commercial requirements of Flexibility Service Providers is a plus.
  • Strong negotiating, influencing, and communication skills, with the ability to make persuasive presentations to small and large audiences.

What you’ll get

A competitive salary– dependent on capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 20% of your salary for stretch performance, and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
