With the increasing penetration of renewables, flexibility will be key to balancing supply and demand, ensuring grid stability, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. In this role, you’ll help to set the future strategic direction of flexibility through the development of policy decisions, using your expertise to identify market barriers and implement innovative solutions that enhance the flexibility of the system. By unlocking the potential of flexible technologies, you will help deliver cost-effective, reliable energy while accelerating the UK’s journey toward net-zero.

Additionally, through supporting different projects on different future policies that impact on ancillary service and flexibility markets, you will gain understanding of all types of technologies—renewables, storage, demand-side response, etc—and how they can help the operation of a decarbonised electricity system. The projects you help shape will position GB as the most competitive and sustainable energy market in the world. In this fast-paced, dynamic role, you’ll work with industry experts, government, investors, and stakeholders to shape the solutions that unlock new opportunities, and optimise market design, to enable a level-playing field. This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities

  • You will be involved in day-to-day activities of the Distributed Flexibility Strategy and Policy team, supporting the team on a various number of projects.
  • Supporting the development of GB flexibility policy development.
  • Supporting the horizon scanning of GB and European policy developments.
  • Supporting and coordinating our response to relevant consultations.
  • Producing high quality commercial analysis (including recommendations of options) and draft reports in the form of power point packs or word documents.
  • Structuring a strategic approach to problem solving, drawing on established economic principles and market trends, while having the capacity to think creatively.
  • Delivering project management support for collaborative projects between NESO and industry to find innovative market based solutions for low carbon system operation.
  • Use both your knowledge and expertise, and from across the industry and internally, to provide option analysis to support the future strategic direction of our markets.
  • Being involved in both internal and external engagements, and create an enduring process for future engagement.

About you

This role would be in the Distributed Flexibility Strategy and Policy team. The purpose of the team is to ensure the long-term strategic direction for NESO Markets is enabled by the different policy decisions required across industry and we are appropriately influencing what the outcomes are. We are also responsible for ensuring the strategic coordination between NESO and DSO’s to deliver our strategic market objectives. This role would be at the heart of developing and supporting key market reform policies and activities in the NESO to enable us to reach our clean power 2030 targets. You will support the senior leads in the team working on varied, high profile strategic projects such as the DESNZ Low Carbon Roadmap, DSO-NESO Co-ordination of technical requirements, the Market Facilitator Transition, and to shape the future of NESO markets based on our operational requirements and changes in technological landscape.

What you’ll get

A competitive salary between £43,000 - £48,000pa – dependent on experience and capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
