About The Role
Our Major Programmes team is delivering some of the most ambitious hydrogen and decarbonisation projects in the country. As a Senior Hydrogen Design Assurance Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring we develop safe, innovative and future‑ready engineering designs across multiple disciplines. Your expertise will guide the creation of the UK’s first hydrogen technical standards and support the delivery of a truly national hydrogen transmission network. What you’ll be doing
- Design leadership & coordination: Acting as the single point of contact for technical design support to Project Managers. Coordinating engineering inputs across EC&I, process, civil and mechanical disciplines. Identify, analyse and resolve complex design risks and conflicts early, supporting timely decision‑making across a complex programme portfolio. Ensuring designs comply with National Gas policies, procedures and evolving hydrogen standards. Leading design reviews to make sure outputs meet safety, environmental, sustainability and Net Zero requirements.
- Managing design delivery: Overseeing contractor Design Plans, deliverable schedules, and change control processes. Ensuring completeness, quality and accuracy of design deliverables, drawings and 3D models. Driving progress against critical deadlines and proactively managing design risks and dependencies.
- Safety, assurance & governance: Ensuring compliance with CDM regulations, process safety assessments and Principal Designer duties. Managing complex technical queries, deviations and design change control. Supporting safe, compliant and efficient design solutions through robust risk identification and mitigation.
- Innovation & technical standards: Helping develop National Gas’s first hydrogen technical standards. Bringing insight from industry best practice, benchmarking and emerging Net Zero technologies. Translating strategic goals into practical, implementable design requirements.
About You
You’re an excellent communicator who builds trust quickly and can influence stakeholders at all levels. You thrive in complex, collaborative environments and bring a proactive, solutions‑focused approach to problem‑solving.
Key Requirements & Experience
Essential:
- Degree in a relevant engineering or energy discipline, or equivalent proven experience.
- Significant experience in design coordination or design management with a similar environment energy, utilities, infrastructure process plant.
- Strong knowledge of design assurance processes, design change control and commissioning/asset acceptance frameworks.
- Deep understanding of CDM Regulations and Principal Designer responsibilities.
- Experience working with drawings, 3D models, BIM standards and design assurance processes.
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with internal teams, contractors and regulators.
- Leadership experience and the ability to guide and support design teams across multiple projects.
Desirable:
- Experience in hydrogen, CCS, renewable integration or other emerging clean‑energy technologies.
- Chartered or working towards chartership status.
- EC&I experience.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Many positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions.
