About us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

At National Gas, our Major Programmes are driving the transformation of Britain’s energy network, particularly within Hydrogen and CCUS. We’re looking for a Quality Assurance Engineer to play a pivotal role in ensuring that everything we design, build and deliver meets the very highest standards, safely, compliantly, and right first time. This is a high-impact role at the heart of our capital delivery portfolio. As a trusted Quality Assurance leader, you’ll provide independent oversight across complex engineering projects, from design through to commissioning, ensuring robust quality management, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. You’ll be instrumental in embedding a culture of excellence, driving innovation, and strengthening our ISO9001 Quality Management System (QMS), helping us deliver critical infrastructure safely and efficiently.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading investigations into non-conformances, identifying root causes and implementing solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Developing, maintaining and continuously improving the ISO9001 Quality Management System, acting as a subject matter expert.
  • Providing independent quality assurance and control across all project phases, including design, procurement, construction and commissioning.
  • Reviewing and supporting project handover documentation, ensuring robust asset acceptance and operational readiness.
  • Approving Quality, Inspection and Test Plans and supporting safe, compliant project delivery.
  • Delivering 1st line assurance audits and contributing to wider audit programmes.
  • Capturing lessons learned, driving best practice, innovation and standardisation across the programme.
  • Providing ‘informed buyer’ input into commercial activities including contract scope, tender evaluations and contractor onboarding.
  • Supporting inspection, testing and commissioning activities across site and factory environments.
  • Contributing to incident investigations and providing expert quality insight across the project lifecycle.

About you

You’re a confident and credible professional who thrives on influencing others and driving high standards across complex environments. You build strong relationships with ease, communicating technical concepts clearly while challenging constructively to achieve the best outcomes.

Key requirements & experience

  • Incorporated Engineer (or working towards) with a relevant professional institution.
  • HNC (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline.
  • Strong experience in quality assurance and control within a project delivery environment, ideally aligned to ISO9001.
  • Proven experience delivering audits and working within quality management systems.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across internal teams, contractors and regulatory bodies.
  • Solid understanding of engineering standards, legislation and quality compliance within infrastructure or construction environments.
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations and Safety by Design principles.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • ISO9001 Internal or Lead Auditor qualification.
  • IOSH or NEBOSH certification.
  • Experience within gas transmission, utilities or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of commissioning, operational and asset acceptance processes.
  • Experience in materials inspection, procurement or QA management qualifications.

What we offer

  • Annual bonus of 6% based on personal and company performance.
  • 26 days’ holiday plus statutory holidays - option available to buy extra or sell days.
  • Overtime at x1.5 normal and then x2 on Sunday.
  • Double-match pension scheme - for every £1 you put in, we’ll add £2 (max company contribution 12%).
  • Opt-In flexible benefit scheme, including salary sacrifice private healthcare, dental insurance, technology plans and more.
  • Financial protection with 10x salary death in service and financial support if you’re unable to work due to long term illness or injury.
  • Excellent family friendly provisions - maternity/paternity/adoption/surrogacy/shared parental leave.
  • Career progression, professional training and development – including access to LinkedIn Learning.
  • Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24/7.
