As a Senior Process Engineer, you\’ll be at the heart of our Net Zero programme, providing expert process engineering input, technical leadership, and assurance across major projects. Your work will ensure that our new and repurposed infrastructure meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and compliance, enabling the UK\’s energy transition and supporting industrial competitiveness.

What you\’ll be doing

  • Acting as the process engineering technical authority for assigned projects and assets, ensuring designs meet standards, regulatory obligations, and best industry practice.
  • Reviewing, verifying, and approving process engineering designs from internal teams and external contractors.
  • Providing technical assurance through all project phases: concept, FEED, detailed design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Ensuring compliance with national and international codes and standards (IGEM, API, ASME, ISO, etc.).
  • Supporting the development and application of corporate engineering standards and specifications.
  • Analysing key process documents (PFDs, P&IDs, cause and effect diagrams, simulations, design basis reports).
  • Evaluating process safety aspects, including pressure relief, hazardous area classification, and SIL assessments.
  • Leading or contributing to hazard studies (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA) and risk assessments.
  • Collaborating with project engineers and stakeholders to ensure fit-for-purpose designs.
  • Capturing lessons learned and operational feedback to drive continuous improvement.

About you

Key requirements & experience

Essential:

  • Degree-qualified in chemical engineering, process engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer or close to submission.
  • Significant experience in process engineering design within gas transmission, oil & gas, utilities, or similar process industries.
  • Proven track record delivering or assuring engineering design packages across the full project lifecycle.
  • Deep knowledge of process safety principles and application in high-pressure systems.
  • Familiarity with compressor stations, above ground installations, pressure regulating and metering systems, gas blending, or decarbonisation technologies.
  • Working knowledge of UK regulatory and technical frameworks (IGEM/TD/1, UK Gas Safety (Management) Regulations, COMAH, DSEAR).
  • Skilled in process simulation and analysis tools (e.g. HYSYS, Aspen).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to influence engineering decision-making.

Desirable:

  • Experience supporting major hydrogen or decarbonisation projects.
  • Mentoring or technical leadership experience.
