About the role
We’re looking for an experienced Project Engineer / Design Coordinator to play a key role in coordinating and assuring engineering design activities across multiple projects. With a strong focus on Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I), you’ll ensure that all design outputs are compliant, robust, and ready to support successful commissioning, operational readiness, and asset acceptance. Working across multidisciplinary teams and multiple projects simultaneously, you’ll act as a central interface between designers, contractors, project teams, quality, and site operations ensuring design information is accurate, controlled, and delivered on time. This role can be based flexibly, provided you are within a 1-hour commuting distance of either our Livingston or Bishop Auckland office, with regular site and office attendance as required.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Coordinating multidisciplinary design activities in line with engineering schedules
- Ensuring designs comply with contractual requirements, legislation, standards, and internal policies
- Managing and controlling design documentation, including drawing registers and design change control
- Coordinating technical queries, deviations, and design clarifications through to resolution
- Reviewing design submissions to ensure quality, completeness, and readiness for delivery
- Supporting design assurance activities, audits, and quality reviews
- Contributing to design risk management, including process safety and environmental assessments
- Attending and contributing to design progress meetings and wider project forums
- Coordinating supplier engagement, including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
- Supporting Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and operational readiness on site
- Leading the review and approval of redline mark-ups and final as-built documentation
- Ensuring accurate and timely handover of design information to support asset and operational acceptance
About you
You’re a confident and detail-focused engineering professional who thrives in a coordination and assurance-focused role. You’re comfortable working across multiple projects at once, communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, and challenging technical information where needed to ensure safe, compliant outcomes. You take pride in the quality of your work, have a strong understanding of design governance in regulated environments, and are proactive in identifying and resolving issues before they impact programme or safety.
Key Requirements & Experience
- Experience in a Project Engineer, Design Coordinator, or similar design assurance role
- Strong understanding of engineering design processes within regulated environments
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and compliance requirements
- Experience managing design change control, technical queries, and deviations
- Ability to review, interpret, and challenge technical design information
- Excellent coordination, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Strong document control and information management capability
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects concurrently
Qualifications & Technical Experience:
- Degree-qualified in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related discipline (preferred)
- Minimum HNC (or equivalent) in Engineering
- APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or equivalent
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or BIM tools (certifications advantageous)
- Experience supporting FAT, SAT, commissioning, and as-built documentation processes
