National Gas is securing Britain's energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We're looking for an Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Engineer to join our team, primarily based at our Carnforth site, with wider responsibility across the Lancaster, Chorley and Kendal North areas. This is a multidisciplinary role covering electrical, instrumentation, and control systems, supporting the safe and reliable operation of our assets across the region.
You'll provide technical expertise to site teams, project engineers, suppliers, and wider stakeholders as we maintain, upgrade, and commission essential equipment and protection systems across our network. You'll play a key role in ensuring our infrastructure remains safe, compliant, and resilient against both operational and cyber-related risks.
Day to day, you'll work closely with operational and delivery teams to resolve technical issues, support project delivery, and drive continuous improvement. This includes contributing to system design reviews, advising on engineering standards, and identifying opportunities for innovation, simplification, and standardisation.
Although this position is technically focused, it is not a hands-on tools-based maintenance role. Instead, you will act as a technical authority—guiding, advising, and influencing engineering outcomes rather than carrying out physical maintenance tasks. The role includes occasional travel to other sites and meetings across the UK, with homeworking in between where appropriate. A full UK driving licence is therefore essential. Standby and overtime opportunities are available as part of this role.
What we're looking for:
- Minimum HNC qualification (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience in the design, build, commissioning, maintenance, or operation of Industrial Automation & Control Systems within a high-hazard or process industry environment.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems and rotating machinery.
- Full UK car driving licence.
- Relevant industry certifications (highly beneficial): Control & Instrumentation experience in a relevant process industry.
- Functional Safety – TÜV Functional Safety Professional/Engineer.
- Hazardous Areas – CompEx Ex01–04, Ex12a, Ex12b.
What we offer:
- Company car based on doing 10,000 company miles being met annually.
- Annual bonus of up to 6% based on personal and company performance.
- 26 days' holiday plus statutory holidays - option available to buy extra holiday days.
- Generous double-match pension scheme - for every £1 you put in, we'll add £2 (max company contribution 12%).
- An optional flexible benefit scheme, including private healthcare, dental insurance, technology plans, travel insurance.
- Death in service 10x your basic salary.
- Financial protection if you're unable to work due to long term illness or injury.
- Excellent family friendly provisions - maternity/paternity/adoption/shared parental leave.
- Professional development and career progression.
- Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24 hours per day.
- Financial support to help you cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, relevant to your role.
