About The Role
We’re looking for an experienced instrumentation, control, and automation (ICA) Technician, known as a Cyber Technician within National Gas, to join our West 5 Operations Team, supporting the security and resilience of the National Gas Transmission System. This is a Home Start role covering the South West region. This is not a typical IT or corporate cyber role. This is a hands‑on position working directly with Operational Technology (OT) assets that underpin the UK’s gas infrastructure.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Placing health and safety first, demonstrating safe working practices to keep yourself, visitors, contractors, and your team safe during day‑to‑day operations.
- Act as a subject‑matter expert, bringing specialist technical knowledge and experience into the day‑to‑day operations within the West 5 area (South West) and the region’s gas assets.
- Work with the planning team to organise your time effectively, prioritise and deconflict routine maintenance, investigations and manage defects.
- Complete routine maintenance of ICA/Cyber assets across operational gas sites.
- Work closely with the central security team to ensure compliance and readiness; support other teams/areas, facilitate cyber assurance visits and upgrade projects.
- Respond to and support asset failures and fault investigations, engaging with third‑party contractors when necessary.
- Protect our assets from cyber threats, maintain business continuity through configuration and backup of OT, maintenance of asset data and credentials, completion of malware sweeps, and upgrade work to meet vulnerability management requirements.
- Support capital project delivery and installation of new OT/Cyber assets and secure disposal of retired OT assets.
- Participate in a one‑in‑four stand‑by; receive additional remuneration when on the rota.
About You
You are a practical problem‑solver with a methodical approach to your work and a strong sense of ownership. You are confident working independently and as part of a team, with the ability to organise, prioritise and manage tasks effectively. Your attention to detail and analytical mindset help you navigate challenges and contribute to the smooth running of operational environments. You bring a proactive attitude, willingness to learn and a commitment to maintaining high standards.
Key Requirements & Experience
- BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering or cyber security.
- Time‑served apprenticeship (or other recognised training scheme) in instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering or cyber security.
- Experience managing and maintaining OT, including fault‑finding in Clear SCADA, PLCs, instrumentation and communications systems.
- Experience following maintenance work procedures for OT, fault investigation and remediation.
- Proven ability to complete maintenance on operational instrumentation, organising, prioritising and scheduling work assignments.
- Analytical problem‑solving skills relating to instrumentation and related disciplines.
- Ability to correctly interpret and utilise engineering drawings.
- Full UK car driving licence.

- Generous holiday allowance (26 days + bank holidays).
- Flexible benefit scheme, incl. private healthcare, dental insurance, technology plans and more.
- Financial protection with 10× salary death in service and financial support for long‑term illness or injury.
- Excellent family‑friendly provisions: maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave.
- Professional development opportunities, financial support for professional memberships.
