About the role
National Gas is investing in pioneering projects such as Project Union and East Coast Hydrogen, major initiatives that will help unlock a decarbonised, hydrogen‑powered future. As a Hydrogen Design Assurance Engineer, you will sit at the heart of these programmes, ensuring that innovative, safe and sustainable engineering designs come together seamlessly across multiple disciplines and partners. Your work will directly shape the first hydrogen transmission infrastructure in the UK, setting new technical standards, solving engineering challenges, and ensuring designs meet the highest levels of safety, quality and environmental performance.
What you will be doing
- You will be a central link between project teams, contractors, technical specialists and regulators.
- Lead the coordination of multidisciplinary engineering designs across EC&I, process, civil and mechanical disciplines.
- Act as the technical design focal point for Project Managers, ensuring design activities align with project scope, National Gas standards and evolving hydrogen technical requirements.
- Drive progress against design schedules, managing dependencies and ensuring design outputs meet safety, sustainability and Net Zero objectives.
- Oversee compliance with CDM regulations, process safety assessments and Principal Designer responsibilities.
- Manage design approvals, technical queries, deviations, and design change control procedures.
- Facilitate design reviews and ensure robust quality assurance of drawings, 3D models and BIM processes.
- Collaborate with environmental and consents specialists to ensure design solutions reflect environmental assessments and sustainability commitments.
- Identify, analyse and resolve design risks and conflicts early, supporting timely decision‑making across a complex programme portfolio.
About you

Key requirements & experience
- Essential: Degree‑level education in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent proven experience.
- Strong proven experience in design coordination or design management within energy, utilities, process plant or major infrastructure projects.
- Deep understanding of safety and sustainability within engineering design.
- Familiarity with CDM Regulations and Principal Designer responsibilities.
- Experience working with drawings, 3D models, BIM standards and design assurance processes.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate and communicate clearly with internal teams, contractors and regulators.
- Desirable: Experience in hydrogen, CCS, renewable integration or other emerging clean‑energy technologies.
- Chartered or working towards chartership status.
- EC&I experience.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions.
