About us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

Help protect and maintain a critical national energy network. In this field-based role, you’ll deliver capital marker post replacement, asset health work, and hands-on maintenance and emergency response across pipeline and site assets. You’ll primarily support the Lincolnshire area, with flexibility to work across the wider East region when required. As part of our Operations team, you’ll work across terminals, compressor stations, AGIs and pipelines – ensuring assets are safe, compliant and well maintained, resolving defects, and responding when it matters most.

What you'll be doing:

  • Manage replacement of missing/damaged aerial and pipeline marker posts, ensuring defects meet policy timescales.
  • Carry out housekeeping, minor repairs and grounds maintenance across sites and pipeline routes.
  • Deliver planned maintenance to required standards, policies and procedures.
  • Support Operations Engineers to protect the high-pressure network, including line walking (up to 200 km/year), monitoring third-party work, responding to aerial sightings, marker/site maintenance, cathodic protection checks and in-line inspection support.
  • Work safely at all times in line with National Gas procedures.
  • Support emergency, safety, security and environmental response, including site security monitoring, standby rota and occasional shift working.
  • Contribute to wider team priorities and continuous improvement.
  • Undertake Safe Control of Operations roles (e.g. Competent Person, Working Party Member) where authorised.
  • Participate in a standby rota once fully trained.

About you

You’re practical, safety-focused and comfortable working outdoors across varied and sometimes remote terrain. You bring a strong team mindset, take ownership of tasks, and communicate clearly. You stay calm under pressure and are ready to step in during emergency situations.

Key requirements & experience:

  • Experience in field-based maintenance, utilities, construction or similar technical environment.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety and environmental practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors and walk long distances over rural terrain.
  • Basic mechanical/maintenance skills and use of hand tools.
  • Clear communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to participate in standby rota and occasional shift work.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Experience with pipeline operations or high-pressure systems.
  • Knowledge of cathodic protection or in-line inspection support.
  • Previous Safe Control of Operations authorisations (e.g. Competent Person/WPM).
  • Experience monitoring third-party works and site security.
  • Relevant technical qualifications (e.g. engineering, utilities, or maintenance).
