National Gas is recruiting a Control and Instrumentation Security Technician. Join our Operations team to support the security and resilience of the National Gas Transmission System.

About the role:

  • Salary: £42,813 to + £50,368 up to 6% bonus, overtime
  • Location: Can be based at any of our 4 key sites: Kirriemuir (Forfar), Avonbridge (Falkirk), Wooler (Northumberland), Bishop Auckland (Durham).
  • On‑site 5 days a week plus travel/overnight stays across the Scotland & North region as required.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintain and secure critical control systems and instruments across operational sites—from large compressor stations to smaller AGI installations.
  • Perform routine cyber maintenance and upgrades to keep systems resilient and compliant.
  • Back up configurable OT devices to ensure business continuity.
  • Manage access credentials and maintain accurate asset data.
  • Support vulnerability management, malware sweeps, and incident investigations.
  • Facilitate cyber assurance visits and assist with upgrade projects.
  • Keep network drawings and asset records up to date.
  • Participate in an on‑call rota for key cyber functions.
  • Collaborate with the central security team to ensure readiness and compliance.

Security clearance:

The successful candidate must achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance for this role. Many positions are subject to national security clearance and trade control restrictions. Eligibility may be affected by place of birth, nationality, citizenship, and residency.

Key requirements and experience:

  • BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ level 3) in instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering, or cyber security discipline.
  • Time‑served apprenticeship or recognised training scheme in the same areas.
  • Cyber security training – desirable.
  • Experience managing firewalls, managed switches, etc. – desirable.
  • Experience taking operational technology backups – desirable.
  • Experience following maintenance work procedures for operational technology – desirable.
  • Proven ability to complete maintenance on instrumentation, including organising, prioritising and scheduling of work assignments – desirable.
  • Ability to analyse and solve problems relating to instrumentation and related disciplines – desirable.
  • Demonstrate ability to correctly interpret engineering drawings – desirable.
