Location: East Region

Working pattern: Hybrid, with a minimum of 3 days a week working in the office or on site.

Travel: Regular travel across the region, including our regional hub in Peterborough.

Location requirement: Based within reasonable travelling distance of one of our East Region sites (Peterborough, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Diss, King's Lynn, Hatton, or Bacton).

About us: At National Gas, the work we do matters. As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future. Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role: We’re looking for a Senior Electrical Project Engineer to join our East Region Project Delivery team, supporting the development and delivery of electrical investment projects across the National Gas transmission network. This is not a traditional electrical engineering role. Rather than focusing on operational maintenance activities, you'll provide electrical engineering leadership, technical assurance, and governance across a diverse portfolio of project work, from scope development through to commissioning and handover.

Why this role matters: Across our East Region, our compressor stations, Bacton Gas Terminal, and wider operational sites depend on safe and reliable electrical infrastructure. You'll help protect that performance by delivering investment projects and ensuring new and modified assets meet the right technical standards. Working alongside project managers, designers, contractors, and operational teams, you'll influence engineering solutions, provide technical challenge, and help deliver improvements that support the long-term reliability and performance of critical gas transmission infrastructure.

Projects you'll work on: You'll support the delivery of a wide range of electrical infrastructure projects across the East Region, including:

  • HV and LV electrical infrastructure upgrades
  • Switchgear and transformer replacement programmes
  • Standby generation and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) installations
  • Hazardous area electrical systems
  • Compressor station and gas terminal modifications
  • Electrical asset replacement and reliability improvement projects
  • Construction, testing, and commissioning activities across operational gas transmission sites

These projects directly support the safe and reliable operation of some of the UK's most critical energy infrastructure.

What you'll be doing: Lead electrical design assurance activities across investment projects, ensuring compliance with standards, specifications, and governance requirements. Review, challenge, and approve contractor design submissions, technical queries, and engineering changes. Define and develop technical scopes that deliver safe, efficient, standardised, and cost-effective solutions. Provide technical leadership throughout project development, construction, commissioning, and handover. Assess technical risks, scope changes, and engineering impacts to support successful project delivery. Undertake assurance activities to verify compliance with safety, environmental, quality, and technical requirements. Build strong relationships across project teams, operations, contractors, and stakeholders to support successful delivery and continuous improvement.

What you'll bring: You'll be an experienced electrical engineer who enjoys applying technical expertise within a project delivery environment, providing engineering leadership, assurance, and technical challenge to support successful project outcomes.

Essential:

  • HNC/HND, or equivalent, in electrical engineering
  • Experience in supporting the delivery of engineering, infrastructure, industrial, or construction projects
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems and installations, including design, inspection, testing, and commissioning activities
  • Experience reviewing, challenging, and approving contractor or third-party engineering designs and technical submissions
  • Strong understanding of CDM Regulations, electrical safety legislation, quality management systems, and project delivery governance
  • Proven ability to manage stakeholders, influence technical decisions, and support multiple projects
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable:

  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status
  • Qualifications in auditing, IOSH, NEBOSH, design management, or Construction Design and Management
  • Experience working in potentially explosive atmospheres, including CompEx environments
  • Knowledge of Safety by Design principles and engineering assurance processes
  • Experience within gas transmission, energy infrastructure, or other highly regulated operational environments

Security clearance: This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment.

What we offer: Market-leading double-match pension (up to 12% company contribution), annual performance bonus up to 6%, company car (subject to business mileage), access to the Tusker salary sacrifice car scheme, 26 days holiday (plus statutory holidays), 10x salary life assurance and income protection, flexible benefits including healthcare, dental, and technology options, family-friendly policies, wellbeing support, and professional development opportunities.

Inclusive recruitment: We're building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve, championing diversity, and creating an inclusive workplace where everyone is valued for their unique contribution. We support reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and beyond. National Gas is a Disability Confident employer and signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant.
