About the role

This is not a traditional IT or desk‑based cyber role. We’re looking for an experienced Operations Technician - Cyber or Instrumentation, Control and Automation (ICA) Technician, known internally as a Cyber Technician, to join our West 4 Operations Team, based out of our Wormington site, supporting the security and resilience of the National Gas Transmission System, one of the UK’s most critical national infrastructures. This is a home‑start, field‑based role covering the West 4 patch. You’ll spend your time out on operational sites rather than behind a desk, working hands‑on with live Operational Technology (OT) environments. From major gas terminals to smaller, remote installations, you’ll be directly involved in maintaining and protecting the systems that keep gas flowing safely across the country. Rather than monitoring cyber threats from a screen, you’ll be on site, working with real industrial assets control systems, industrial PCs, firewalls and managed switches applying cyber security where it truly matters: in the physical world. If you’re an ICA or OT professional looking for an operational, technical cyber role with genuine impact and responsibility, this is a chance to work at the very heart of the UK’s energy infrastructure.

What you’ll be doing

  • Put health and safety first by consistently applying safe systems of work across all operational sites.
  • Act as the OT cyber subject matter expert providing ICA and operational cyber expertise across the West 1 patch.
  • Plan and prioritise maintenance, investigations and defect resolution in collaboration with the planning team.
  • Maintain ICA and cyber assets and investigate faults across operational gas sites.
  • Protect critical infrastructure by securing OT systems through backups, credential management, malware scanning and upgrades.
  • Work closely with central cyber security teams to support compliance, readiness and asset upgrades.
  • Support cyber assurance activities by facilitating site access and assurance visits.
  • Install new OT and cyber assets and securely decommission retired equipment.
  • Participate in a 1‑in‑4 standby rota following training to support operational resilience.

About you

You’ll be a practical problem‑solver with a methodical approach to your work and a strong sense of ownership. You’ll be confident working independently and as part of a team, with the ability to organise, prioritise, and manage tasks effectively. Your attention to detail and analytical mindset will help you navigate challenges and contribute to the smooth running of operational environments. You’ll bring a proactive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to maintaining high standards in everything you do.

Key requirements & experience

  • BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in an instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering or cyber security discipline.
  • Time‑served apprenticeship (or other recognised training scheme) in an instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering or cyber security discipline.
  • Experience of managing and maintaining Operational Technology (OT) including fault finding Clear SCADA, PLC’s, instrumentation, and communications systems.
  • Experience in following maintenance work procedures for operational technology, as well as fault investigation and remediation.
  • Proven ability to complete maintenance on operational instrumentation, including organising, prioritising and scheduling of work assignments.
  • Ability to analyse and solve problems relating to instrumentation and related disciplines.
  • Demonstrate ability to correctly interpret and utilise engineering drawings.
  • Full UK car driving licence.

What we can offer

  • Competitive salary and annual performance bonus.
  • Double‑match pension scheme (max. company contribution 12%).
  • Generous holiday allowance (26 days + bank holidays).
  • Flexible benefit scheme, incl. private healthcare, dental insurance, technology plans, and more.
  • Financial protection with 10x salary death in service and financial support if you’re unable to work due to long‑term illness or injury.
  • Excellent family friendly provisions such as maternity, paternity, adoption, and shared parental leave.
  • Professional development opportunities inc. financial support to help you cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions.
  • Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24/7.
  • Inclusive, supportive, and forward‑thinking workplace.
