About us
National Gas is securing Britain's energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
We’re looking for a Gas Operations Cyber Technician to join our Operations team and help protect the cyber security and resilience of the National Gas Transmission System. This is not a traditional IT or corporate cyber role. Instead, you’ll work hands‑on with Operational Technology (OT) - the control systems and networked assets that keep Britain’s gas infrastructure running safely and reliably. From major gas terminals to Above Ground Installations (AGIs), you’ll be out on site, embedded in operations, and directly supporting critical national infrastructure. Your work will have a real‑world impact – ensuring essential systems remain secure, compliant, and operational, and supporting the safe delivery of energy across the country.
What you’ll be doing
- Carrying out routine cyber maintenance across operational gas sites
- Backing up configurable OT devices to support business continuity
- Maintaining accurate asset data and secure access credentials
- Completing upgrades to meet vulnerability management requirements
- Securely decommissioning and disposing of OT assets
- Supporting malware sweeps and cyber incident investigations
- Facilitating cyber assurance visits and supporting site access for upgrade projects
- Keeping network drawings and asset records up to date
- Working closely with the central cyber security team to ensure compliance and readiness
- Participating in an on‑call and standby rota once fully trained
About you
You’ll be a hands‑on, practical problem solver who enjoys working in operational environments. You take pride in doing things properly, have a strong sense of ownership, and are comfortable managing your own workload while collaborating with others.
- A methodical, safety‑focused approach
- Strong attention to detail and an analytical mindset
- Confidence working both independently and as part of a team
- A proactive attitude, with the willingness to learn and develop in a specialist OT cyber environment
Key requirements & experience
Essential
- BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in Instrumentation, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or Cyber Security
- Time‑served apprenticeship (or recognised training scheme) in a relevant discipline
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Cyber security training
- Experience managing firewalls, managed switches, or similar networked devices
- Experience taking Operational Technology backups
- Familiarity with OT maintenance procedures
- Experience maintaining instrumentation and scheduling work activities
- Ability to analyse problems and interpret engineering drawings
Security clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held. What we offer
- Competitive salary and annual performance bonus
- Double‑match pension scheme (max. company contribution 12%)
- Generous holiday allowance (26 days + bank holidays)
- Flexible benefit scheme, incl. private healthcare, dental insurance, technology plans, and more
- Financial protection with 10x salary death in service and financial support if you’re unable to work due to long‑term illness or injury
- Excellent family friendly provisions such as maternity, paternity, adoption, and shared parental leave
- Professional development opportunities inc. financial support to help you cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions
- Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24/7
- Inclusive, supportive, and forward‑thinking workplace
