As an Instrumentation Operations Technician, you’ll play a key role in the safe and reliable operation of National Gas’ transmission assets, based from Kirriemuir and supporting a wider operational area that includes regular travel to AGI (Above Ground Installation) sites. This role has a strong focus on process instrumentation, supporting assets including pipelines, AGIs, compressor stations and terminals. You’ll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, calibrating, commissioning and fault‑finding instrumentation and associated control systems critical to gas transmission operations. The role offers autonomy, technical variety and long‑term development, including opportunities to broaden into multi‑skilled operations and, where appropriate, develop electrical certification capability.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintain, inspect, calibrate and fault‑find process instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level, analyzers, transmitters).
  • Support inspection, testing and verification of control and safety‑critical instrumentation.
  • Carry out work within hazardous areas, ensuring compliance with standards and legislation.
  • Support commissioning, upgrades and modifications at AGI and regional operational sites.
  • Travel as required to support AGIs and associated gas transmission assets.
  • Participate in a 1‑in‑4 standby/on‑call rota, supporting fault response and emergencies.
  • Work within permit‑to‑work systems and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Contribute technical input to asset integrity, reliability improvements and projects.

Essential Experience & Qualifications:

  • Time‑served apprenticeship or recognised training scheme in Instrumentation or EC&I.
  • Level 3 qualification (BTEC, City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ or equivalent).
  • Instrument maintenance and fault diagnosis experience within Oil & Gas or process industries.
  • Experience working in hazardous areas.
  • Understanding of instrumentation systems, control philosophy and relevant legislation.
  • Strong Safe Systems of Work knowledge.
  • Full UK driving licence (essential due to travel requirements).
  • Willingness to participate in a standby rota.

Desirable (Strong Advantage):

  • Instrumentation COMPEX Ex01–04.
  • Experience with safety‑related and control instrumentation.
  • Electrical (Supporting) BS7671 (18th Edition) C&G 2391 / 2377 (advantageous, not essential).

Other:

  • COMPEX Ex11.
  • Experience working on AGIs, pipelines or gas transmission infrastructure.
  • Electrical experience or interest in developing.
