National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We are responsible for transporting gas to power stations, major industries, storage facilities, and more than half a million businesses and 24 million homes through nearly 5,000 miles of pipes across Britain. National Gas is also proud to lead the way in transforming the energy network for a clean energy future. Energy security has never been more important, more visible or more central to the national conversation. As an import dependent country, our ability to secure gas molecules when and where they’re needed is critical to maintaining a resilient energy system. With the continued decline in North Sea production and a rapidly evolving supply and demand landscape, it is essential that we work closely with government and industry to shape the energy market frameworks required for the future. Gas will remain a vital, flexible energy source, supporting renewable intermittency and underpinning system reliability as the UK transitions toward a lower-carbon economy. This is an exciting and high impact role, reporting directly to the Energy Systems & Resilience Director and forming part of the wider senior leadership team. The role will lead both short and long term workstreams focused on molecular security, ensuring strong alignment and coordination across the organisation and with external stakeholders in a rapidly evolving landscape. You will be responsible for shaping and driving the discussion on future gas market frameworks, and lead government consultation responses on this topic. As the organisational lead for this area, you will manage the interface between the Executive and the Board, and represent the organisation at all levels across external forums on this topic. Join us, and help be the energy behind the change.

Key accountabilities:

  • Lead the cross-business coordination response to DESNZ’s Gas In Transition publications, ensuring key overarching themes are embedded, and relevant strategic company ambitions are reflected.
  • Provide leadership to the Energy Security Strategy team, building a culture of high performance and setting clear objectives and expectations.
  • Lead the external engagements with Ofgem and DESNZ relating to market energy security at all levels of their organisations.
  • Preparation of Executive and Board level materials, presenting with confidence and impact.
  • Work closely with Corporate Affairs ensuring external messaging is consistent with policy objectives, and tone is aligned.
  • Develop options to enhance the emergency tool provision, identifying areas for improvement or development, and leading implementation with industry.
  • Liaise closely with Energy System Resilience to identify relevant market-based actions (e.g. from National Power Outage workstream), formulate appropriate responses and represent market energy security at relevant industry forums.
  • Develop and deliver the Demand Side Response (DSR) strategy, including the 26/27 approach and delivery of the engagement strategy. Produce a recommendation for future, and gaining regulatory sign-off of the approach.
  • Represent National Gas Transmission externally at relevant energy security forums, ensuring gas representation in whole energy conversations and disseminating relevant information internally to ensure a consistent and aligned view of energy security.
  • Pre-empt topics responding to significant external events impacting energy security, leading the preparation and/or coordination of information to answer energy security related questions.

About you:

  • Degree educated in a relevant topic, or significant proven experience.
  • Detailed understanding of the gas National Transmission System (NTS), current system operation and balancing (highly desirable).
  • Programme Management – demonstrable experience of delivering complex projects and programmes.

  • Outstanding Communication – able to confidently disseminate complex information and relay appropriately to audiences.
  • Adapt at writing CEO briefing papers, Executive and Board papers and delivering presentations at all levels.
  • Leadership – proven management experience with a track record of delivering successfully through a high performing team.
