About Us

At National Gas, the work we do matters.

As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain.

While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.

Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About The Role

As an Operations Engineer, you'll play a critical role in the real-time operation of Britain's National Transmission System (NTS).

Working within our National Control Centre on a 24/7 shift basis, you'll monitor, control and respond to network conditions to ensure the safe, reliable and secure transportation of gas across Great Britain.

The National Transmission System is critical national infrastructure, supplying the gas that helps power homes, businesses and essential services across Great Britain.

Every day, our Operations Engineers make important operational decisions that directly impact network performance, security of supply and public safety.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a highly skilled operational environment where no two shifts are the same.

You'll collaborate with colleagues, customers and industry stakeholders to manage network performance, respond to operational challenges and support the safe delivery of maintenance and construction activities across the network.

This is a flow-through role, offering a clear progression pathway through the grading structure.

Progression is based on the successful demonstration of the safety, technical and professional competencies required at each grade, together with consistently performing to the standards expected of the next level.

  • What You'll Be Doing
  • Monitor and control the real-time performance of the National Transmission System and associated assets.
  • Develop and implement within-day and day-ahead operating strategies to maintain the safe, reliable and secure operation of the network.
  • Respond effectively to changing network conditions, operational incidents and plant upsets in a fast-paced environment.
  • Authorise operational activities and support the Safe Control of Operations process, including maintenance and construction works.
  • Monitor, analyse and respond to network alarms, escalating issues where required.
  • Work closely with suppliers, shippers, distribution networks, customers and internal stakeholders to deliver effective operational outcomes.
  • Support the management of gas supply emergencies and contribute to operational improvement projects.

Essential

  • What you'll bring
  • Degree qualified in Engineering or a related discipline, or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to quickly assimilate information and clearly communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable decision-making experience, particularly in high-pressure environments where multiple priorities must be managed simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyse technical information and make accurate operational assessments within tight timescales.
  • Ability and willingness to work a continuous 24/7 shift pattern.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of real-time transmission system operations.
  • Engineering knowledge of gas transmission assets and infrastructure.
  • Understanding of gas safety legislation and operational procedures.
  • Experience working in a safety‑critical operational environment.
  • Security clearance

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV).

Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment.
