A distinguished 25-acre property situated in the scenic countryside of Ibiza. The garden contains a diverse plant collection, thriving nature, and is a place for animals and wildlife. The estate sits within Ibiza’s natural landscape. Set against the backdrop of olive groves and aromatic herbs, the Estate provides a unique opportunity for an exceptional horticultural professional to support the gardens owner and creator to lead the garden team and fulfil the vision for the garden.
Role Summary:
The Head Gardener is responsible directly to the owner for the management and hands-on running of the estates gardens and landscape. This pivotal role requires both technical expertise and leadership, ensuring the estate’s gardens remain at the forefront of Mediterranean and English horticultural practice. The Head Gardener will oversee and develop their team, foster collaboration with apprentices, and help achieve the owner’s vision.
Garden Details:
- Styles: Mixed Mediterranean and English style planting featuring drought-tolerant species, aromatic shrubs, native and non-native wildflowers, and structured olive and citrus groves; English garden sections with ornamental borders, perennial displays, and naturalised lawns.
- The garden also contains several water features and streams, and a productive area to support the kitchens culinary needs.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and lead daily “prioritised” operations across all garden areas.
- Develop and implement seasonal and rotational plans for planting, pruning, irrigation, propagation, fruit and vegetable production, and soil management.
- Manage and supervise an overall team of around 5 garden and estate staff and apprentices, plus specialist contractors for harvesting and pruning.
- Oversight of non-horticultural maintenance and other chores will largely be supported by dedicated staff within the collaborative team.
- Collaborate and conspire with the garden and estate owner to realise new projects and reach new goals.
- Promote wildlife conservation and sustainable practices.
- Maintain health and safety standards, manage the gardens team performance and individual development, support a budget and oversee the procurement of supplies.
- Representing the estate to visiting guests, groups and professionals.
Candidate Profile:
- RHS level 3 or 4, diploma in horticulture, Kew or other related study.
- Minimum three years’ practical experience in Mediterranean or English-style gardens.
- Strong leadership, team management, and mentoring abilities.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
- Proficiency in sustainable horticultural practices and wildlife conservation.
- Flexible, creative, and enthusiastic about garden innovation.
