The National Gallery is seeking an exceptional individual to take on the role of Head of Research , a new and pivotal position that will shape the future of art scholarship and public engagement at one of the world’s most renowned institutions. As Head of Research, you will lead and develop a forward-thinking research strategy that aligns with the National Gallery’s mission to advance knowledge, preserve cultural heritage, and make art accessible to everyone. You will oversee a dynamic research team, guiding interdisciplinary projects that deepen understanding of our collections, exhibitions, and historical narratives. Your role will include coordinating research partnerships and enhancing our global reputation through collaborations with academic and cultural institutions worldwide. In this role, you’ll manage the newly established Research Centre, ensuring it becomes a vibrant hub for art scholarship. Your expertise in securing funding, managing budgets, and fostering an inclusive research environment will be instrumental in the success of the Gallery’s bicentenary initiatives, including significant capital projects designed to enhance visitor experience and learning. We are looking for a strategic thinker with proven leadership experience, ideally within museums or cultural institutions, and a commitment to ethical research practices.
