Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is looking for an operational General Instructor - Live Fire Lead to join our Learning and Development Department at Wray Park Training Centre, Reigate. The successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of training within the Live Fire subject area, support the development and standards of other instructors, and contribute to wider operational training where required. This may include Recruit Training, Technical Rescue, Immediate Emergency Care Response, Apprenticeships and Development.

External applicants must currently work for another Fire and Rescue Service and be competent at Crew Commander or Watch Commander rank. They must hold:

  • an instructing qualification, such as PTLLS or Level 3 Award in Education and Training;
  • an assessor qualification, such as CAVA or the full A1 Assessor Award;
  • at least one of the following: Breathing Apparatus Instructor, Compartment Fire Behaviour Instructor or Tactical Ventilation Instructor.

Applications are also welcomed from competent operational SFRS personnel who hold at least one of the operational instructor qualifications listed above. Internal candidates who do not yet hold the required teaching and/or assessor qualifications will be supported to achieve them.

The role is available as either a permanent appointment or a 12-month secondment. The postholder will be required to maintain operational competence by completing at least one operational duty shift per month at an SFRS fire station at their substantive rank. Some evening and weekend working will also be required.

Salary is £45,711 per annum for a Developing Watch Commander or £50,034 per annum for a Watch Commander B, plus a 10% flexibility enhancement, Surrey Allowance of £1,755 and a Continuous Professional Development payment of £949, where applicable.
