The Opportunity

  • Salary: £36,363 to £39,152 per annum.
  • Working Pattern: Full-time, 37 hours per week. May require varied patterns to meet service needs.
  • Location: Potential base locations include Horsham Training Centre and Fire Station, Lancing Fire Station, Worthing Fire Station or Chichester Fire Station. A mix of homeworking and office/visit days around the County will be required; base location agreed with the successful applicant.
  • Interviews: 17 and 19 February 2026.

Role focus: As a Fire Service Driving Instructor, you will support the Operational Training Team Business Plan and the Service’s Community Risk Management Plan, ensuring staff are competent, empowered, safe, and healthy behind the wheel. You will be responsible for the training, instruction and examination of all Fire Service staff who are required to drive as part of their role, including service vehicles for general use and in an emergency response capacity.

What we are looking for:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • IT skills for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to present and deliver training to groups and individuals, adapting delivery style to diverse audiences
  • Ability to coach and influence to encourage appropriate actions
  • Ability to deliver feedback and create action plans tailored to learner needs
  • Current, clean LGV UK driving licence (held for a minimum of 3 years)
  • Class 2 driving licence – minimum 3 years (no 78 restriction)
  • Level 3 Adult Education and Training (AET) award
  • Parts 1, 2 & 3 DVSA Approved Driving Instructor
  • NFCC Approved Emergency Response Driving Instructor
  • Assessor’s qualification – TAQA or equivalent
  • Experience of blue light response driving (fire, police, ambulance)
  • In-depth knowledge of the Highway Code
  • Knowledge and understanding of safe driving practices, nationally and within West Sussex County Council
  • Knowledge of basic LGV and car mechanics
  • Knowledge of practical and theoretical instruction of vehicles
  • BORDER off-road 4×4 instructor qualification or equivalent

Our ideal candidate will possess the majority of the skills and qualifications listed above. We are open to discussions with individuals nearing completion of some qualifications; training may be offered to fully qualify as part of the role.
