About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Estates and Facilities Management Team at West Midlands Fire Service, where you will play a vital role in managing, maintaining, and improving a diverse property portfolio that supports the delivery of emergency services across the West Midlands. Facilities Management plays a vital role in supporting the operational effectiveness of the service. By ensuring our estate is safe, compliant and well maintained, you will directly contribute to our ability to respond to emergencies and protect communities. As a Facilities Management Surveyor, you will contribute to ensuring that our buildings are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose, while also supporting longer-term asset management strategies, investment planning, and improvement projects. You will deliver a full range of professional building surveying services across the portfolio, helping to protect and enhance our assets both now and for the future. Your work will span property inspections, maintenance planning, project delivery, statutory compliance, and contract management, providing a broad and engaging workload. Working closely with internal teams, contractors, and external consultants, you will play a key role in ensuring our buildings are well-managed, functional, and aligned with organisational priorities. This role is well suited to someone who can confidently identify issues, develop practical solutions, and build effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Key responsibilities

  • Support strategic asset planning through operational property data
  • Contribute to property reviews and business cases for asset optimisation
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for decision-making
  • Provide professional advice on property matters
  • Maintain and update the property asset register
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs with contractors and maintenance teams
  • Conduct regular inspections of WMFS properties
  • Liaise with tenants and resolve property-related issues
  • Support financial forecasting and reporting for property operations
  • Contribute to capital and revenue budget planning for property assets
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety and statutory regulations

What we’re looking for

  • Significant post-qualification experience, which should include extensive building/construction experience/project management
  • Knowledge of building methods, terms, relevant legislation, eg CDM and Workplace Regulations
  • Knowledge of preparing specifications, condition surveys, cost estimates, financial management and completing JCT contracts
  • Practically oriented, able to make decisions, able to understand diverse/complicated information
  • Experience of working unsupervised
  • Possess a full driving licence and own vehicle
  • Formal training in applying CDM (eg Planning Supervisor)
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical services, technical drawing, structures
  • Building surveying project management commercial property
  • Proficient on AutoCAD

Qualifications:

  • Degree or similar appropriate professional/technical qualification (building related) or extensive experience with thorough knowledge of the building profession
  • CDM building regulations related qualifications, NEBOSH certificate or IOSH Managing safely, etc.

Working Pattern

  • 37 hours per week
  • Hybrid working – minimum of three days in office one designated on-site cover day per week
