National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
This is an opportunity to join us at the heart of real-time energy operations. As a Real-time Energy Market Analyst, you will sit at the intersection of wholesale markets, balancing mechanisms and real-time system operations in our Electricity National Control Centre (ENCC). You will translate complex commercial signals and market data into actionable intelligence that directly shapes how the power system is operated minute by minute — helping to ensure system stability and protect end consumers, particularly during periods of tight margins and volatile pricing.
Working alongside Control Room engineers, planners and market specialists, you will integrate and interpret a uniquely rich mix of data — spanning real-time demand signals, embedded generation, interconnector flows, and wholesale, balancing and ancillary prices, including some datasets that are uniquely available to NESO through its system operator role. Your insights will directly influence operational decisions and build new analytical capability at the heart of the control room.
This role can be based in Wokingham and we continue to offer hybrid working from office min 2 days and home.
Key Accountabilities- Analyse energy market data — including prices, demand signals and cross-border flows — to identify commercial trends and their impact on system behaviour.
- Model and forecast energy and reserve requirements, translating market intelligence into practical inputs for Control Room decision-making.
- Monitor market conditions during periods of system stress, providing timely insight on generation response and demand flexibility.
- Develop and maintain dashboards and reporting tools that give Control Room engineers clear, actionable signals.
- Identify and integrate new external datasets that improve the quality and timeliness of market intelligence.
- Act as a bridge between real-time operations and flexibility market development teams, flagging risks and supporting long-term planning.
We are looking for a curious, analytically minded professional who understands how markets and commercial incentives shape real-world behaviour — and who wants to apply that understanding in a high-impact operational setting.
Market & Commercial UnderstandingYou have a solid grasp of how energy or commodity markets work — how prices form, what drives fluctuations, and how market participants respond to commercial signals. A background in energy policy, economics, finance or a related field is welcome. You don’t need to have worked in power systems specifically, but you should be comfortable reasoning about supply, demand and price dynamics.
Analytical & Data SkillsYou can work with large or complex datasets, draw meaningful conclusions, and communicate them clearly. Experience with data visualisation, statistical modelling or tools like Excel is important. What matters most is your ability to turn data into insight that others can act on.
Mindset & ApproachYou are proactive, collaborative and keen to build something new. You enjoy working across teams, are comfortable in fast-moving environments, and take ownership of your work. An interest in the energy transition and how markets are evolving is a plus.
QualificationsA degree in Economics, Finance, Energy Policy, Public Policy or a related discipline. Equivalent professional experience is equally valued.
