About The Role

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals and encourages you to join as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Reporting directly to the Head of GWEND and alongside other NESO teams working on gas, hydrogen or multi‑vector workstreams, the role offers the opportunity to work in a fast‑paced, multi‑faceted team structure that tackles core system responsibilities. GWEND is responsible for planning the gas transmission network and the hydrogen system that Britain might need, forming part of the Strategic Energy Planning directorate tasked with planning the future for Britain’s electricity, gas and hydrogen systems.

The Head of GWEND also supports wider NESO teams working on emerging whole system topics – notably Resilience and Emergency Management, Markets, and the Strategy and Policy directorates. The role requires working and networking with Senior Managers and their teams across NESO to develop research and analysis, interfacing with DESNZ, Ofgem and other stakeholders and customers. It offers the chance to build a broad range of skills, gain knowledge of the whole system energy transition, and build a network within NESO. This role is based in Warwick and offers hybrid working from office and home, open to full‑time and part‑time applicants and flexible arrangements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Providing analytical support to GWEND teams, including Data Science, Hydrogen and Gas Network Analysis, and Network Engineering.
  • Identifying relevant research, analytical activity and gaps in NESO’s knowledge, ensuring proactive high‑quality research and analysis of disparate elements of the energy system and transition (e.g., biomethane, land use, NTS exit capacity, hydrogen blending, gas storage economics).
  • Distilling research and analysis into digestible reports, recommendations, and presentation materials, translating complex technical information into understandable messages for internal, external and non‑technical audiences.
  • Forging strong, credible relationships with internal stakeholders across all business areas, encouraging collaboration and a holistic approach to insight development while avoiding silos.
  • Building relationships with a wide range of external stakeholders including political entities, regulatory bodies and industry players.
  • Ensuring compliance with the team’s programme management and governance structure.
