Requisition Number: 67115
Department: ESO
Job Function: Strategy
Description
About the role
National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
We’re looking for passionate and skilled Security of Supply Modelling Specialists x4 to join our Energy Security Modelling team. The team play a pivotal role in ensuring the energy security of Great Britain. We develop cutting-edge modelling to provide expert advice to Government on critical decisions related to security of supply, policy targets and future policy development.
Three successful candidates will lead the design and development of bespoke in-house energy market models, supporting key obligations relating to target capacity recommendations for the Capacity Market auctions. The fourth will join our team of PLEXOS experts, focusing on modelling the contribution of interconnectors to security of supply. All roles offer the freedom to innovate—driving forward methodologies and enhancements that keep our modelling world-class and fit for the future
This isn’t just modelling, it’s mission-critical work. We speak directly to government to inform decisions on how much electricity capacity to secure through the GB Capacity Market—currently worth around £3 billion annually. You’ll be helping to answer questions like: How much electricity capacity do we need five to eight years from now? What mix of technologies will keep the lights on through the energy transition?
You’ll lead the development of cutting-edge modelling, shape the annual Electricity Capacity Report, and engage with key stakeholders including DESNZ, Ofgem, and the Panel of Technical Experts. You will bring fresh thinking to how we model uncertainty, risk, and resilience in a rapidly evolving energy landscape
This role will be based in Warwick (we also have our Wokingham and Glasgow offices, you would expected, where possible, to travel to Warwick or other locations for specific in-person collaboration events). We continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. This is a full-time role, and we offer flexible working arrangements.
About Us
National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) mission is to facilitate the decarbonisation of Great Britain’s energy network and ensure the delivery of reliable, affordable, and clean electricity for consumers. We work with stakeholders across the whole energy industry to plan for future network needs, using a wider adoption of technology and changes in consumer behaviour, as well as ensuring we have the right markets, networks, and frameworks in place, to transform the way we operate tomorrow.
Join us, and let’s energise progress.
energy, our future, together.
About The National Energy System Operator (NESO)
In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.
The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.
The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.
Key Accountabilities
- Leading modelling to provide recommendations to Government through our annual Electricity Capacity Report
- Lead modelling improvements through a set of development projects that are determined through our annual project prioritisation process.
- Lead modelling on the contribution of different technologies through their Capacity Market de-rating factors.
- Lead modelling to support recommendations to Government on the Capacity Market target, informed by analysis of different supply and demand scenarios, as well as prevalent risks to security of supply.
- Lead data management and assurance processes to ensure modelling remains accurate and robust, identifying and obtaining new data where appropriate.
- Build effective relationships and communicate modelling activities to key stakeholders, notably DESNZ, Ofgem and the PTE, to promote transparency and ensure our results are trusted.
- Produce analysis, including clear visualisations, of modelling results that quickly provide stakeholders with the key messages they need to act on methodology or policy decisions.
- Use your knowledge and expertise to contribute to the wider modelling activities of the Energy Security Modelling team.
Accountabilities will be split across the 4 available roles and will include:
- Lead the development and enhancement of our Pan-European market modelling capabilities to provide insight on the contribution of interconnectors to system adequacy.
- Assess the risks to security of supply during the transition to Net Zero.
- Lead the modelling of different supply and demand scenarios within GB and across Europe to assess risks to security of supply driven by uncertainty in future supply and demand patterns including those related to extreme weather.
- Support advanced modelling capability in PLEXOS.
