The offline modelling team enables the planning and operations for the Electricity Transmission System across England, Scotland, and Wales by maintaining and developing GB-wide system models. These models are used for short-term to long-term planning, spanning from hour ahead up to 12 years. The team works with industry participants—Transmission Owners, Distribution Network Owners, Generators, and OEMs—to share data and best practices, enhancing product accuracy.
Key responsibilities include power system analysis product development and management, asset data management, the Electricity Ten Year Statement (ETYS), Centralised Strategic Network Plan (CSNP) models, and third-party model requests for connection assessments. Additionally, we deliver transformative projects such as process digitalisation and automation to analyse risk, improve customer experience, and increase efficiency.
This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) mission is to facilitate the decarbonisation of Great Britain’s energy network and ensure the delivery of reliable, affordable, and clean electricity for consumers. We work with stakeholders across the whole energy industry to plan for future network needs, using a wider adoption of technology and changes in consumer behaviour, as well as ensuring we have the right markets, networks, and frameworks in place, to transform the way we operate tomorrow.
In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system. The NESO will build on our existing roles and capabilities to create an organisation that serves the energy system and its users’ needs, looking across vectors including electricity, natural gas, and hydrogen, and considering trade-offs between them. The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator, and any commercial interest. NESO will be licensed and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and will identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable, and secure way for all.
As a Power System Engineer here, you will have a combination of the following critical activities:
- Design and maintain models for onshore/offshore electricity transmission systems, ensuring system integrity and proactively integrating new technologies
- Oversee product management for applications like PSCAD, DigSilent PowerFactory, and in-house Python tools
- Develop and manage analytical and automation tools for robust network analysis
- Collaborate with industry partners to keep models updated, support policy and code changes, and provide engineering compliance guidance
- Engage with users to identify requirements, ensure legislative compliance, manage strategic projects, resolve customer queries, create training materials, and review processes annually
- Lead on grid compliance studies for third party model submission
- Lead on NESO network modelling commitments related to the Grid Code and System Operator Transmission Owner Codes

- Strong skills in utilising RMS or EMT simulation tools (preferably DIgSILENT PowerFactory or PSCAD)
- Good understanding on the application of Inverter-based resources (IBRs) in power systems (e.g., HVDC, FACTS, wind farm, BESS)
- Can present technical information to a range of stakeholders through written reports and presentations
- Lead or participate in grid compliance studies (especially EMT), ensuring that generation and transmission projects meet regulatory and technical standards
- Conduct simulations for power systems using PSCAD and DIgSILENT PowerFactory to analyse system behaviour under transient conditions
- Understanding of industry frameworks, codes, and technical challenges
- Strong written communication skills for reports and presentations
- Critical thinking and the ability to challenge ideas constructively

A competitive salary between £55,000 - £72,000pa – dependent on experience and capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
