NESO Legal provides comprehensive legal support to all areas of the NESO organisation and includes 9 lawyers and 2 apprentice trainees. We are looking for a motivated lawyer to join our well respected and growing inhouse team to help us support and guide NESO on its journey to deliver its challenging and important mandate. The successful candidate needs to be able to deliver first class legal support to NESO in an effective and timely manner to ensure that the organisation can meet its statutory, regulatory and commercial objectives. You will work across a variety of areas within the organisation. including connections, system operations, strategic planning, security of supply, energy insights, energy markets, resilience and emergency management, data and AI. Your work will involve understanding NESO’s statutory duties and applying arrangements set out across licences, industry codes and contractual terms and conditions. Alongside legal skills we are looking for an individual who is passionate about energy and the net-zero ambition and who has the drive to support and enable the organisation in its ambitions. This role will report into one of the senior lawyers and you will work closely with the other lawyers within NESO Legal and stakeholders across NESO. This role can be based in Warwick or Wokingham, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements. Key Accountabilities Taking instructions from NESO stakeholders and highlighting priority areas requiring legal support and agreeing with the relevant NESO Legal Business Partner action plans to address issues. Preparing and providing first class tailored legal advice, working closely with team members and the relevant stakeholder on legal and regulatory developments and strategic & commercial negotiations, taking account of all relevant legal risks. Reviewing, drafting and advising on legislation, licences, policies, industry codes, commercial contracts with the relevant stakeholders, and engaging with industry stakeholders and regulators to reflect agreed commercial principles, business rules or regulatory objectives. Researching, developing training materials, and delivering presentations to the team and other NESO stakeholders on relevant legal, commercial or other topics to drive continuous improvement within both the legal team and the business more broadly. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has/is: A sound basis of technical legal skills, from either a commercial or regulatory background, and willingness to develop into an interdisciplinary NESO energy lawyer. Good written and oral communication skills, able to listen effectively, and able to provide practical, pragmatic, user-friendly advice appropriately tailored to the audience in a clear and concise manner. A willingness to learn and develop knowledge and awareness of the wider political, economic, social, and technological environment in which NESO operates and its internal organisational activities and operations. The ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines in a fast-paced environment and to manage and deliver against competing priorities. A collaborative mindset and works with others across multiple legal and business teams. Strong ethical standards and interest in creating belonging with NESO by embracing diversity and building a high-performing and inclusive team. A growth mindset and keen interest in personal and professional development and co-building trust within and outside NESO Legal. A curious mindset and ability to create, innovate and think outside the box when it comes to future-proofing NESO Legal. Desirable Experience working in the energy sector or broader regulatory experience. Experience working in-house or at a regulator or other public body and familiarity with the law that applies (e.g. freedom of information, judicial review) Experience managing a range of stakeholders An interest in the emergence and deployment of digital technologies like generative artificial intelligence. About What You\’ll Get A competitive salary between £72,000 – £85,000pa – dependent on experience and capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance, 28 days annual leave as standard, and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. Your energy, our future, together. About The National Energy System Operator (NESO) In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system. NESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them. The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest.
