About Us

At the National Energy System Operator (NESO), we play a vital role in tackling climate change and securing Great Britain’s energy future. We already operate the world’s fastest decarbonising electricity system and are working towards our ambition to run it carbon‑free for a short period this year – provided the market supplies electricity exclusively from renewable sources. Alongside this, we provide expert advice to government on how to deliver a clean power system by 2030. In autumn 2024, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) transitioned to become NESO – an independent, expert public corporation with a whole‑system view across electricity, gas, and hydrogen. NESO operates independently and transparently, always acting in the best interests of all energy users. Licensed and regulated by Ofgem, we make impartial decisions that balance sustainability, affordability and security. Our organisation is fully independent from government, the regulator and all commercial interests with a clear focus on system‑wide benefit, long‑term value and public purpose. The time to deliver is now. Join the energy transformation and help shape the future.

About The Role

We’re looking for engineers to develop, optimise and deliver the outage plan for our electricity network, ranging from six years ahead to day‑ahead. You’ll ensure system security, manage transmission constraint costs and more, using a background in engineering or another numerical discipline and a passion for learning new approaches.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed technical analysis and derive system outage plans from a 6‑year ahead to day‑ahead, ensuring smooth access to the electricity transmission system.
  • Manage and quantify the necessities and risks for locational energy contracts and trades.
  • Keep tabs on and adapt system access requirements as necessary.
  • Produce comprehensive operational plans for the NESO Control Room to use in real‑time, including a daily, detailed, secure and cost‑effective system configuration for enactment.
  • Forge effective customer relations and swiftly tackle interface liaison issues.
  • Regularly liaise at internal and external meetings to sync operational interface issues and planning coordination.
  • Innovate solutions to system access challenges and minimise risks and costs.
  • Guarantee that system security is maintained and business risks are minimised.

About You

  • Ability to flourish within team environments, appreciating feedback and contributing positively.
  • Strong communication abilities.
  • Strong ability to prioritise tasks, manage changes and work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • A degree in Engineering, STEM, or relevant experience (e.g., an HNC or Diploma in Power System Operation).
  • Experience working with different teams, departments or customers.
  • A genuine appetite for learning.

What You’ll Get

A competitive salary of £45,000 – £68,000, dependent on experience and capability. In addition to your base salary, NESO offers core benefits: a bonus based on company performance; 26 days annual leave; a competitive contributory pension scheme where we double match your contribution up to a maximum company contribution of 12%; and annual enrollment to the NESO Savings Plan, where we match 50% of contributions between £20‑£500 per month.

Benefits

  • Flexible bank holidays and holiday trading.
  • Additional birthday day off.
  • Cycle‑to‑work scheme, retail and gym discounts.
  • Private medical insurance, critical illness insurance and personal accident insurance.
