Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

We’re looking for a Python Software Engineer to join our Network Topology Optimisation team, helping to develop innovative software that supports smarter operation of the electricity network. You’ll design, develop and enhance existing applications that automate engineering processes, integrate with specialist analysis tools and improve operational efficiency. Working alongside engineers and technical specialists, you’ll develop robust, maintainable code, contribute to new optimisation solutions and help shape the future of our technology. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex problems through software development and is keen to learn, innovate and make a real impact.

This role can be based in Wokingham, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home with the requirement to be present in the office 1-2 days/week. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Design, develop and maintain Python applications and software solutions.
  • Enhance and automate engineering processes through innovative software development.
  • Develop and improve optimisation algorithms and data processing solutions.

  • Produce well-structured, maintainable and documented code.
  • Support testing, deployment and continuous improvement of developed solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, digital teams and external partners to deliver high-quality technical solutions.
  • Take ownership of developed applications, providing ongoing support and enhancements.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK by the start of employment. Visa sponsorship may not be available for this role and will be considered in line with business requirements.

  • Experience developing applications in Python.
  • The ability to write clean, well-structured and maintainable code.
  • Experience working with data processing, APIs or software integration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive approach, with the curiosity and ambition to learn and apply new technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or another relevant STEM discipline is desirable. Experience with power system analysis software would be advantageous but is not essential.

We’re particularly keen to hear from individuals with a growth mindset who are excited to learn and develop their skills. If you have a passion for software development, a willingness to embrace new challenges and a desire to grow your career, you’ll be supported every step of the way.

Research shows that some people may hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, and welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds to build a workforce that feels valued and respected and represents the communities we serve.

About Us

At the National Energy System Operator (NESO), we play a vital role in tackling climate change and securing Great Britain's energy future. We already operate the world's fastest decarbonising electricity system and are working towards our ambition to run it carbon-free for a short period this year - provided the market supplies electricity exclusively from renewable sources. Alongside this, we provide expert advice to government on how to deliver a clean power system by 2030.

In autumn 2024, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) transitioned to become NESO - an independent, expert public corporation with a whole-system view across electricity, gas, and hydrogen. NESO operates independently and transparently, always acting in the best interests of all energy users. Licensed and regulated by Ofgem, we make impartial decisions that balance sustainability, affordability and security. Our organisation is fully independent from government, the regulator and all commercial interests, with a clear focus on system-wide benefit, long term thinking and public value.

The time to deliver is now. Join the energy transformation and help shape the future. Your energy. Our future. Together.
