At the National Energy System Operator (NESO), we play a vital role in tackling climate change and securing Great Britain's energy future. We already operate the world's fastest decarbonising electricity system and are working towards our ambition to run it carbon-free for a short period this year - provided the market supplies electricity exclusively from renewable sources. Alongside this, we provide expert advice to government on how to deliver a clean power system by 2030.

In autumn 2024, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) transitioned to become NESO - an independent, expert public corporation with a whole-system view across electricity, gas, and hydrogen. NESO operates independently and transparently, always acting in the best interests of all energy users. Licensed and regulated by Ofgem, we make impartial decisions that balance sustainability, affordability and security. Our organisation is fully independent from government, the regulator and all commercial interests, with a clear focus on system-wide benefit, long term thinking and public value.

The time to deliver is now. Join the energy transformation and help shape the future. Your energy. Our future. Together.

National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior ServiceNow Engineer to play a key role in the greenfield implementation of our ServiceNow platform. This role requires deep technical expertise in ServiceNow, strong understanding of DevOps & Agile delivery practices, and a mindset that maximises Out‐of‐Box (OOB) functionality to ensure a scalable, maintainable, and upgrade‐friendly platform.

The ideal candidate will be hands-on, collaborative, and able to partner with product owners, architects, developers, and business stakeholders to build a modern, resilient, and future-ready digital workflow ecosystem. This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Platform Implementation & Development: Participate in and lead technical design and development for a greenfield ServiceNow implementation across ITSM, ITOM, ITAM, HRSD, or other workflow modules. Configure and develop ServiceNow applications while prioritising OOB capabilities, minimising customisation, and ensuring adherence to platform best practices. Implement and maintain integrations using IntegrationHub, REST/SOAP APIs, and industry-standard integration patterns. Build and maintain CMDB, Discovery, Service Mapping, and automation frameworks in line with service management foundations.
  • DevOps & Agile Delivery: Work in an Agile Scrum environment, contributing to backlog refinement, sprint planning, and continuous delivery. Implement automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and version control using DevOps toolchains (Azure DevOps, ATF, etc.). Support continuous improvement, iterative releases, and feature enhancements aligned with DevOps culture.
  • Platform Governance & Best Practices: Ensure compliance with platform governance, architecture standards, and development frameworks. Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including solution designs, workflows, and data models. Conduct peer reviews, ensure code quality, and enforce architectural patterns that support reliability, security, and performance. Drive platform upgrades ensuring minimal technical debt and full compatibility with OOB features.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with product owners, architects, service managers, and business units to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions. Act as a ServiceNow subject matter expert (SME) providing guidance and mentoring to junior developers and platform admins. Provide L3 support for complex incidents, platform issues, and deployment challenges.
