Overview

National Energy System Operator is looking for an Energy Policy Analyst specialising in governance and coordination to support NESO’s strategic engagement with Government and the regulator.

The role involves advising on energy policy and strategy, providing independent energy insights, and supporting government with decision making and strategic direction.

The Energy Policy Team shapes NESO’s Strategy and Policy capability, engages with Government and the regulator, and oversees statutory requests for advice from Government and Ofgem.

Responsibilities

  • Support Energy Policy Governance Manager in ensuring NESO is an effective partner in trilateral governance by identifying emerging policy issues and providing high-quality strategic briefings to Executives and Senior Leadership.
  • Lead planning and sequencing of strategic discussions across senior boards, ensuring issues are well framed, timely, and joined up.
  • Develop and maintain the NESO Policy Community of Practice to enable effective knowledge sharing and consistent practice across teams.
  • Collaborate with Energy Policy Governance Manager and Head of Policy to manage statutory requests for Advice from Government and Ofgem.
  • Build and maintain relationships with DESNZ and Ofgem to understand potential requests for advice, priorities, and likelihood of materialisation; oversee NESO triage process.
  • Improve policy intelligence gathering and dissemination through development of flagship products (policy horizon scanning, NESO Strategic Knowledge Hub).

About You

  • Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the machinery of Government and awareness of the GB political environment.
  • Understanding of the energy sector and/or relevant interconnected industries (e. g., water); knowledge of structure, regulatory environment, and short- and long-term industry issues.

Experience

  • Experience in energy-focused roles, ideally including work with or within Government.
  • Demonstrable experience building relationships with stakeholders including Government, regulatory bodies, and industry.
  • Ability to work across teams and organisational boundaries to deliver; experience coordinating with senior stakeholders and governance forums.

Skills

  • Curious and forward-thinking with an interest in energy and the broader energy landscape.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, able to synthesise information and convey complex ideas clearly.
  • Organised and delivery-focused with strong planning, resilience, and attention to detail.
  • Stakeholder engagement: able to build relationships and extract information from busy individuals.
