The National Education Union is a powerful force for change in education, representing 500,000 teachers, lecturers, support staff, and leaders. We are currently looking to appoint a Policy Officer to undertake work on policy issues within the Department, enabling it to carry out its work effectively to advance the Union’s mission to shape the future of education.
Role purpose: To support the Union’s policy work in relation to special educational needs, the behaviour and attendance of children and young people; alternative provision and PRUs; and the experiences of disabled students and disabled members. To help ensure that policy work on these areas informs, supports and assists the achievement of the NEU’s wider priorities, under the direction of the Senior Policy Manager.
Responsibilities: You will be responsible for supporting the team in drafting and development of policy work in relation to SEND, behaviour and attendance and other matters within the remit of the Department. You will have policy or research experience on special educational needs and inclusion in education systems and knowledge of, and ability to operate within, the NEU’s political, educational and legal contexts.
Working pattern: Prospective applicants are advised that your normal place of work will be the NEU office specified in this advert and that the NEU operates ‘Blended Working Arrangements’ for office-based staff, which means you will typically need to be based in the designated NEU office for 3 to 4 days a week (based on a full-time contract), with the remaining days based at home, and subject to business needs.
Salary and benefits: In addition to salary, we offer good conditions including 33 days’ annual leave plus Christmas closure days and a defined benefit pension scheme. Salary and benefits are pro-rata for part-time applicants.
