Normal Working Days can be worked in the NCO office or at home provided there is occasional office presence.

Event Days are location based at weekends and during spring and summer school holidays and require presence at NCO activity across the UK for at least 32 of 48 Event Days each year.

On-Call Days may be carried out anywhere as long as contactable.

Status: Permanent, 126 days per annum inclusive of 15 days' paid leave including bank holidays (pro rata to the entitlement of 36 days for full-time employees). The remaining 111 working days consist of three categories: Normal Working Days (48), Event Days (48) and On-Call Days (15).

Salary: c. £50,000 fte for Working, Event Days, and holidays (111 days inclusive of holiday) plus £50 per On Call Day (15 days) then an hourly rate based on salary if you are called and therefore required to work.

Summary:

Lead and champion outstanding safeguarding, support and wellbeing for children and young people across NCO activity. Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Head of Safeguarding and Support leads on safeguarding policy and practice and oversees NCO's Support Team and Nurses.

Job Description:

NCO's Head of Safeguarding and Support will provide expert safeguarding oversight across the organisation, acting as a key point of contact for safeguarding concerns and supporting staff, freelance teams and families. They will develop and maintain safeguarding policies and procedures, ensure appropriate training and safer recruitment practices, and provide guidance on behaviour, wellbeing and inclusion. They will also oversee the Support Team and Nurses across NCO activity.

Job requirements:

  • Significant experience of safeguarding children and young people, including as a Designated Safeguarding Officer or Lead.
  • Thorough knowledge of safeguarding legislation, guidance and best practice. Experience developing and implementing safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Experience managing and training teams working with children and young people.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and challenging situations with sound judgement and professionalism.
  • Understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Flexibility to attend NCO activity across the UK, including weekends and school holidays.

Job responsibilities:

  • Lead safeguarding practice and ensure NCO meets relevant legislation, guidance and policy requirements.
  • Act as a Designated Safeguarding Officer and manage safeguarding concerns, referrals and casework.
  • Provide advice and support to staff, freelance teams, families and senior leaders.
  • Develop and maintain safeguarding, behaviour, safer recruitment and related policies and procedures.
  • Lead safeguarding and related training for staff, freelancers and the Board.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training and development of NCO's Support Teams and Nurses.
  • Support the wellbeing, behaviour and inclusion of children and young people across NCO activity.
  • Liaise with parents, carers and relevant external agencies where safeguarding or support needs arise.
  • Contribute to organisational risk management, equality, diversity and inclusion, and continuous improvement.
