As a Construction Management Team Lead within Wholesale Lending Services, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the viability and success of our construction loan portfolio. Your expertise in construction management will be crucial in analysing, reporting, and escalating any issues that may impact the property during the term of the loan. You will be responsible for reviewing construction documents, monitoring project progress, and working through project closeout.
Your advanced conflict management skills will be essential in resolving any disputes that may arise, while your experience in construction will help ensure projects remain feasible, compliant, and aligned to loan terms by escalating issues early and partnering with stakeholders on solutions. In this role, you will engage with customers, lenders, design professionals, and third-party consultants to support effective project delivery. You will be expected to balance multiple assignments, communicate clearly, and maintain resiliency when priorities shift. This is a growth role; as volumes expand over time, there may be opportunities to take on additional leadership and/or formal people management responsibilities.
Job Responsibilities- Analyse and review construction documents to assess project viability, leveraging your deep understanding of construction principles and practices and alignment with loan terms and risk policies.
- Conduct risk management review of high profile and high value projects in locations across the UK and EU.
- Apply construction risk policies and procedures, partner with lenders and special asset officers on risk mitigation strategies in complex loan transactions.
- Provide recommendations to strengthen risk mitigation and reduce rework.
- Engage clients and stakeholders on a regular basis to build relationships as part of a support effective project delivery, clear communication, and timely issue resolution.
- Resolve escalated construction-related issues, utilising your advanced conflict management skills to facilitate timely and effective solutions.
- Conduct quality control checks on work performed, ensuring adherence to operational policies and industry standards.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, prioritising tasks effectively to ensure timely and efficient completion.
- Participate in business review processes and resiliency efforts, contributing your expert critical thinking and structured problem-solving to drive continuous improvement.
- Travel minimally as required, demonstrating personal resiliency in managing multiple tasks and projects under potentially stressful situations.
- Monitor project progress from initiation through closeout, identifying and escalating issues that may impact the property, documenting findings, decisions, and follow-ups in a clear and timely manner to support effective controls.
- Support junior team members through coaching, feedback, and knowledge sharing (as applicable as the team grows).
- Demonstrated experience in construction management, construction lending support, or a closely related field (e.g., architecture, engineering, or general contracting) within the UK and EU, with a strong focus on reviewing and analysing construction documentation, assessing project viability, and producing clear risk/technical reporting, supported by a proven track record of effective stakeholder and delivery management.
- Successful track record working with lenders across the UK in a client facing role.
- Capable of reviewing loan documentation to identify and monitor clauses for compliance and risk reports.
- Able to recognise and catalogue financial security being provided by the Borrower (e.g. Collateral warranties, Third Party Rights, Performance Bonds, Cost Overrun Cash Deposits, etc.).
- Proven track record in managing complex construction projects, with a focus on risk mitigation and quality control.
- Demonstrated ability to review and interpret construction documents (for example, plans, budgets, schedules, and contracts) and identify, assess, and elevate construction-related risks and issues in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated expertise in conflict management, with a history of resolving escalated construction-related issues effectively.
- Advanced proficiency in strategic planning, with experience in driving continuous improvement in business processes and resiliency efforts.
- Working knowledge of construction materials, methods, standard practices, and applicable building codes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear documentation and updates.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities using strong organisation and time management skills, and perform effectively under time constraints and shifting priorities while maintaining sound judgment.
- Emerging expertise in AI/ML and strong skills in automation, leveraging technology to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and manage risk effectively.
- Advanced digital literacy and market product knowledge, enabling effective use of digital tools and a deep understanding of the financial services landscape.
- Advanced influence and mentoring skills, engaging stakeholders, driving change, and developing team members to foster continuous improvement.
- Strong abilities in quantitative reporting, supporting data analysis and informed decision-making within the organisation.
- Experience supporting commercial and/or multi-family construction projects and related loan structures.
