National Grid is hiring for a Substation Craftsperson. You'll become a key member of the Derbyshire team, we are looking for an Electrical/Mechanical industrial skilled individual living within 45 minutes of Willington substation (DE65 6DG). You are required to travel as far as Market Harborough due to the patch you will be covering. It's a great opportunity to develop your engineering skills across a large variety of work in a unique environment.

Job Purpose

At National Grid, Electrical/Mechanical Fitters are responsible for maintaining a wide range of works on substation plant and equipment. This work is predominately outdoors and sometimes at height on a mobile platform.

What you'll do

  • Join an established team of fitters to strip down and rebuild high-voltage equipment, replacing worn/aged components.
  • Maintain complex HV circuit breakers, transformers, high-speed on-load tap changers, and cable systems.
  • Work on ancillary equipment such as DC battery systems, air compressors, and generators.
  • Perform installation of new equipment, refurbishment and maintenance of existing equipment, fault investigation and repair, and routine condition monitoring.
  • Benefit from industry-leading training at our facilities in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, and other local substation sites.
  • Participate in a training programme to address any skills gaps, which may require occasional stays away from home (with generous mobility and overnight allowances).
  • Occasionally work weekends, with overtime paid.

About you

  • You have a recognised apprenticeship in Electrical/Mechanical engineering OR an NVQ/Level 3 Electrical/Mechanical qualification with relevant fitting experience.
  • You can demonstrate practical industrial engineering skills, including installations, breakdowns, repairs, maintenance, fault finding, strip-down and rebuilds, working to safety procedures, problem-solving, and following work specifications.
  • You hold a full UK driving licence.
  • You have a good level of computer literacy.
  • You live within 45 minutes of DE65 6DG.

Desirable Skills:

  • High-voltage engineering experience.
  • IOSH/NEBOSH certification.
  • MEWP Licence.

What you'll get

  • Starting salary £38,326 pa including allowance.
  • Seasonal Allowance - £1871 (Paid Monthly or Annually)
  • Paid overtime + Bonus (2025 – up to 4%)
  • Company commercial vehicle from home to work.
  • Hours - 37 Avg Monday to Friday, Days only (Winter 36 hrs / Summer 38 hrs - 4 day working pattern).
  • 26 days holiday plus 8 statutory days.
