Location: London, hybrid—ideally three days per week in the office, with flexibility for the right candidate
The project
Natcap is building new software capabilities to help financial institutions assess environmental risk across companies and investment portfolios.
We’re looking for an experienced contract engineer to add delivery capacity to our small engineering team. Over three months, you’ll help build and ship these capabilities, working across backend services, data models, APIs and the web application.
This is a hands-on, backend-heavy assignment. You’ll take ownership of agreed work, contribute to technical decisions and collaborate directly with colleagues across Engineering, Product, Science and Delivery.
What you’ll deliver
- Python backend services and APIs supporting new Financial Services capabilities.
- Data models and PostgreSQL queries that make complex datasets accessible and performant.
- End-to-end features connecting backend services to our TypeScript and React application.
- Production workflows that integrate scientific and analytical outputs.
- Tested, documented software, with a clear handover so the team can maintain and extend your work.
Technology and ways of working
Our stack includes Python, PostgreSQL, TypeScript, React, REST and GraphQL, with AWS, GitHub Actions and Playwright supporting infrastructure, delivery and testing.
We use AI coding tools extensively. You should already be comfortable using Claude Code and/or GitHub Copilot to accelerate development, while taking responsibility for reviewing the code, testing behaviour and making sound architectural decisions.
We value engineers who can get familiar with an existing codebase quickly, ask useful questions and turn agreed priorities into working software.
What you’ll bring
- Recent, hands-on experience delivering production software with Python.
- Full stack capability with TypeScript and React, with particular strength in backend development.
- Experience building APIs and working with relational databases.
- A track record of joining existing teams and delivering with limited supervision.
- Practical experience using AI coding tools, including recognising their limitations and validating their output.
- Clear communication, a collaborative approach and a thorough approach to documentation and handover.
Experience with analytical software, data visualisation, scientific or geospatial data would be particularly relevant. Financial services or environmental risk experience would also be useful, but is not essential.
Natcap helps businesses understand and act on their nature-related impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities. You’ll work alongside engineers, scientists and product specialists, applying your skills to a practical environmental challenge.
