The Lead Data Engineer supports Nasstar’s Data & AI Apps practice in designing, building and operationalising modern analytics and data platform solutions on Microsoft Fabric and Azure. The role is hands on and delivery focused, leading technical implementation of robust data pipelines and data models that enable BI, Generative BI, and Fabric Data Agents.
You’ll work in a consultancy, client facing environment helping customers shape requirements, establish best practices (including medallion architecture), and deliver production grade outcomes. As the team grows, this role is designed to develop into a Data Architect / Team / Capability Lead position, including potentially line management as the team grows. The role is remote within the UK but there will be some travel to client sites or Nasstar offices as required.
Key Responsibilities- Data engineering and platform delivery – Design and implement Fabric data solutions using medallion architecture, including ingestion, transformation, and curated serving layers across Lakehouse/Warehouse, Data Factory and Notebooks.
- BI, semantic models and Generative BI enablement – Deliver Power BI semantic models and reporting experiences; structure curated data products and metadata to enable Generative BI and Fabric Data Agents.
- Engineering excellence (DevOps, quality, observability) – Implement CI/CD, testing and data quality checks; monitor and troubleshoot performance across pipelines, models and reports.
- Client consulting and delivery leadership – Run workshops and backlog refinement, translate requirements into technical plans, and produce clear documentation and handover artefacts.
- Team growth and future leadership path – Coach junior engineers, help define standards and templates, and progressively take ownership of solution level design as a future Data Architect / Team/ Capability Lead.
- Microsoft certification (or commitment to obtain within 12 months): Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate and/or Azure Data Engineer Associate.
- 5+ years’ commercial experience in data engineering / analytics delivery.
- Strong hands on delivery with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse/Warehouse, Data Factory, Notebooks) and/or modern Azure data platforms.
- Client facing consultancy experience: running workshops, translating requirements, and presenting solutions.
- Proven experience designing medallion architecture patterns and delivering curated data products; experience building and operating Power BI solutions (semantic models, DAX, performance, RLS).
- Strong Python for notebooks, transformations, and automation; confident SQL.
- Comfortable with Git, DevOps practices, and CI/CD approaches.
- Strong communication skills: can explain technical decisions in plain English and build trust with stakeholders.
