Reports to: Portfolio Underwriter
To provide underwriting support and actively underwrite accounts within the designated team and region. This position plays a vital role in enhancing the underwriting capabilities and delivering exceptional service to brokers and clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite accounts as directed by the Portfolio Underwriter.
- Engage directly with brokers and clients on day-to-day underwriting matters.
- Proactively support new business acquisition and retention of existing clients in line with underwriting guidelines.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of risk assessment and technical underwriting across all product categories.
- Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of cover wordings, terms and conditions, and relevant insurance clauses.
- Apply sound knowledge of liability, negligence, and cargo all risks when underwriting.
- Formulate and negotiate insurance terms and conditions within the parameters of underwriting guidelines.
- Manage underwriting tasks, including preparing quotations, confirming cover, and issuing policies.
- Ensure prompt and accurate handling of underwriting and new business inquiries, prioritizing key accounts and targets.
- Prepare thoroughly for renewals, particularly for accounts identified as vulnerable, and liaise with senior underwriters to agree on strategies.
- Collaborate with claims executives to remain informed on claims developments.
- Ensure all underwriting administration is completed accurately and within agreed turnaround times, adhering to contract certainty requirements.
- Regularly review data and reports to verify the accuracy of underwriting processes and records.
- Consistently deliver excellent service to clients and brokers, identifying opportunities to enhance the company’s offering.
- Coordinate credit control activities effectively.
- Utilize underwriting systems efficiently and in compliance with internal standards.
Person Specification
- 2+ Years experience in Marine Insurance
- A solid understanding of underwriting policies, strategy, and technical processes.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with critical thinking skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
- Proficiency in IT, particularly Microsoft Excel, and the ability to adapt to bespoke systems.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration while also being capable of working independently.
- Willingness to travel as required in the future.
- Actively working towards the Diploma in Insurance (DipCII) or equivalent qualifications.
