Applications are invited for the post(s) of Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro. The Royal Cornwall Hospital is situated in the City of Truro. We have a broad range of elective services, with a diverse emergency workload, and a changing demographic with an increasing obstetric population.

The Hospital is a major District General Hospital; a major trauma unit, a vascular centre, with comprehensive cancer services, providing over 30,000 anaesthetics per year, and over 4,000 births, with over 570 beds. We have 27 operating theatres and anaesthesia delivery areas and 18 critical care beds, with further expansion planned. We have recently opened an Enhanced Perioperative Care Unit to look after high‐risk surgical cases.

We are looking for Consultants in Anaesthesia with a broad range of skills to become an active member of a flexible team of 64 consultants and 8 SAS anaesthetists. We deliver anaesthesia across four sites: the Royal Cornwall Hospital, St Michael's Hospital, West Cornwall Hospital and St Austell Surgical Hub. There is agreed government funding for a new Women and Children’s extension to the hospital to include obstetric theatres, two paediatric theatres and two further theatres.

Main duties of the job

The requirements of application for the post in Obstetric Anaesthesia include experience at an Advanced Obstetric level. Wider skills in audit and governance, and management and leadership would be particularly desirable.

The Trust delivers acute medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 570,000 and has a higher proportion of elderly people than the national average. The population more than doubles during the busy holiday periods. Person Specification

Essential:

  • GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of interview date
  • Completed Higher Training in Obstetric Anaesthesia
  • Experience in clinical audit and governance
  • Emergency CEPOD and trauma experience
  • Paediatric Anaesthesia in accordance with Royal College expectation of Adult General Anaesthetist with Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Desirable:

  • Completed Advanced Training in Obstetric Anaesthesia
  • Completion of Obstetric Fellowship
  • Specialist expertise in audit and governance, leadership and management or other areas specific to Anaesthesia
  • Experience in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance and the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients and ensuring this is embedded in clinical practice
  • Post‐Anaesthetic Level 1.5 Care experience
