Job Summary

Royal Cornwall Hospital provides pathology services for Cornwall and is currently looking for a motivated Band 5 Biomedical Scientist to become part of the Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion team, covering the full range of available tests and rotating through all sections. The laboratory has ISO 15189 accreditation and the transfusion laboratory is MHRA compliant. Equipment includes Abbott Alinity HQ, Werfen Coagulation TOP analysers, Grifols Erytra blood grouping analysers, and access to Sebia capillary electrophoresis for haemoglobinopathy and antenatal screening. The hospital operates a 24/7 rota after suitable training. The department supports professional career progression and works with educational establishments for placement and training opportunities.

Cornwall offers outdoor activities, beaches, moorland and coastal walking, surfing, festivals and a mild climate.

Main duties

• Undertake scientific duties in any part of the Department as required to facilitate the smooth running of the service.
• Participate in the 24/7 service provision.
• Provide a clinical technical service by performing routine and specialist analytical testing on a range of biological samples.
• Maintain and run specialist equipment as deemed appropriate by the lead BMS.
• Provide cover for other staff members and engage in the team ethic.
• Supervise, mentor and support Trainee Biomedical Scientists and support staff.
• Support the quality management system.

Qualifications

• Essential – Accredited BMS Degree, IBMS registration portfolio, HCPC registration
• Desirable – IT qualification or experience

Experience

• Essential – Relevant NHS laboratory experience
• Desirable – Practical experience in the host laboratory discipline

Skills

• Able to perform complex laboratory tasks and assays
• Able to understand and deal with abnormal results
• Able to deal with IQC and EQA
• Good interpretive skills
