Job Description

As a Senior Probation Officer within the National Probation Service (NPS), you will play a crucial management and leadership role within a Local Delivery Unit (LDU) or other operational unit. Your responsibilities will include guiding and managing staff to uphold high standards, ensuring the effective and cost-efficient deployment of team resources, and guaranteeing that your team meets the contractual requirements of HMPPS and Community Rehabilitation Companies.

You will be instrumental in driving performance, evaluating practice, and proactively managing staff development, attendance, and diversity matters. A key aspect of this role involves contributing directly to public protection through multi-agency arrangements, individual casework review, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in service delivery. This position also requires you to manage financial resources within your area of responsibility and represent the NPS in collaborations with partners and key stakeholders.

Requirements

• Substantial experience with a proven record of good practice in a variety of settings (including offender risk assessment and management) as a Probation Officer or from working within another criminal justice agency or related work context.
• Probation Qualification Framework Graduate Diploma/ Honours Degree in Community Justice integrated with Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice, or a previously recognised equivalent qualification in England and Wales.
• Understanding of the role of the Probation Service in the Criminal Justice System and in a multi-disciplinary setting, coupled with knowledge and understanding of factors influencing engagement with victims.
• Demonstrable achievements in managing/supporting change and effecting improvements in quality and efficiency, alongside well-developed IT skills to interpret and apply performance reports.
