Job Description

As a Casework Officer within the Northern Ireland Office’s Security & Protection Group (SPG), you will contribute to one of the UK Government’s highest priorities: national security. You will be responsible for ensuring departmental compliance with national security and investigatory powers related legislation, gaining broad operational delivery and policy experience.

This role involves drafting submissions and delivering written and oral briefings for senior officials and Ministers, requiring meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. You will also develop, consult on, implement, and monitor a broad range of national security-related policies and casework, working closely with partners across national and devolved governments.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work at pace and under pressure, prioritising competing tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills to build and maintain an extensive network with policy and operational partners.

  • Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rota for urgent cases, with a standard allowance paid.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DV (Developed Vetting) clearance, which is essential for this role.
  • Open to foreign / overseas applicants who require a UK work visa, as Skilled Worker (Tier 2) sponsorship is available.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary with a London weighting for those based in the capital.
  • Extensive exposure to Government Ministers and a wider portfolio of policy responsibilities due to the department's size.
  • Opportunity for diverse and rewarding work at the heart of public service, within a supportive and agile environment.
  • Flexible working patterns including full-time, part-time, and job share options.
  • Participation in an on-call rota with an allowance, offering additional remuneration.

How to Prepare

For Nigerian and African immigrants targeting this Support role, tailoring your application to the UK public sector is crucial. Ensure your CV highlights any experience in policy, compliance, or operational delivery, even if from a different sector, demonstrating transferable skills like attention to detail, stakeholder management, and working under pressure. Craft a compelling cover letter that directly addresses the job description, showing how your background aligns with national security and legal compliance, and explicitly mention your eligibility for visa sponsorship.

Preparing for interviews should involve researching the Ministry of Justice and the Northern Ireland Office extensively, particularly their priorities in national security. Practice articulating your experience with complex casework, policy development, or legal frameworks. When discussing your visa status, confidently state your eligibility for the Skilled Worker visa and your commitment to a long-term career in the UK.

  • Prepare specific examples demonstrating your attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and communication skills.
  • Research the Investigatory Powers regime and national security policies relevant to the UK.
  • Be ready to discuss your understanding of public service values and commitment to the role's sensitive nature.
  • Clearly state your need for and eligibility for a Skilled Worker visa in your application and interview.
