Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician in Peterborough

The Peterborough Peaking Facilities, located in Peterborough, UK, comprise two power generation sites. The first features two GE Frame 9E simple-cycle gas turbines, while the second is a reciprocating facility equipped with five Wärtsilä 34SG gas engines. Together, the facilities support regional electricity generation and help maintain grid stability during periods of peak demand.

Opportunity Summary

The Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician supports safe, efficient plant operation and optimum asset availability while ensuring compliance with UK safety and environmental standards. The role includes monitoring plant and equipment, responding to alarms and faults, carrying out local plant operation, and performing routine and corrective maintenance.

The O&M Technician also uses the CMMS to manage work activities and supports day-to-day site operations, projects, plant overhauls, and the coordination of third-party contractors.

Additionally, occasional travel to other Whitetower sites may be required to support operations and business needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and oversee plant operations to support safe, efficient performance and optimum asset availability.
• Carry out local operation of plant and equipment, as required, and monitor equipment before, during, and after operation to ensure safe and efficient performance in accordance with environmental requirements.
• Respond promptly to plant and equipment alarms, defects, and failures, assessing conditions and taking appropriate corrective action.
• Carry out planned and corrective maintenance on plant equipment and systems to support safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
• Utilise the CMMS to report faults, raise work requests, plan and schedule activities, support stock control, and raise purchase requisitions.
• Work within established safe systems of work and comply with site safety, environmental, permit-to-work, and isolation procedures.
• Act as a key site contact for maintenance, inspections, projects, and plant overhauls, and participate in the site's Management of Change (MOC) process.
• Plan, coordinate, and supervise work carried out by contractors, ensuring compliance with RAMS, permits, isolation procedures, site rules, and safe systems of work.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and other departments to support safe and reliable station operations.
• Maintain and improve site housekeeping standards to ensure a clean, safe, and well-organised workplace.
• Travel occasionally to other locations within the WhiteTower asset portfolio, as required, to support power station operations and business objectives.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager/General Manager as directed and effectively collaborates with the field planner and colleagues.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 15 kg.

The power station environment may require entering confined spaces, working in restricted or enclosed areas, and handling hazardous substances, with potential exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and high noise levels. Work may also involve exposure to elevated temperatures near operating equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety helmets, eye and hearing protection, respirators or breathing apparatus, chemical- and flame-resistant clothing, high-voltage protective equipment, and fall arrest systems. Face fit testing for tight-fitting respirators may be required in accordance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance. A strict no-smoking policy applies throughout the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The O&M Technician will normally work a Monday to Friday day-shift pattern. Flexibility will be required to work extended hours, weekends, bank holidays, or alternative shifts where necessary to support plant operations and business requirements. The role may also include participation in an out-of-hours call-out or on-call rota, depending on operational needs.

Occasional travel to other Whitetower sites may be required to support operations and business needs.

Compensation

Starting salary will be £49,000 to £53,000 per annum, depending on experience, with eligibility for an annual performance-related bonus.

What We’re Looking For

• Relevant technical qualification in an engineering discipline, such as NVQ Level 3, ONC, HNC, or equivalent.
• Previous experience in operations and/or mechanical maintenance within a power generation, heavy industrial, or similar process environment; power generation experience is preferred.
• Practical knowledge of plant safety rules, permit-to-work systems, isolation procedures, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) practices.
• Working knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental legislation and regulatory requirements applicable to an industrial or power generation environment.
• Experience coordinating or supervising third-party contractors, suppliers, and service providers would be advantageous.
• Experience using a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for work requests, maintenance planning, and scheduling is desirable.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with a proactive and self-motivated approach.
• Strong organisational skills with clear written and verbal communication abilities.
• Competent in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Must hold a full, valid UK driving licence and maintain it throughout employment.
