Located in Newport, UK, Severn Power Station serves as a critical centre of energy generation, leveraging its strategic position to produce 823 MW of electricity. Fitted with two SGT5-4000F gas turbines alongside SST5-5000 steam turbines, the facility represents the forefront of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology. As a key asset within the local energy infrastructure, it provides a dependable and sustainable power supply to the surrounding region.

Opportunity Summary

The Electrical Technician at the Severn Power Station is critically tasked with ensuring the optimal performance and reliability of essential electrical assets such as motors, switchgear, transformers, UPS emergency power systems, and electrical protection systems through regular maintenance and repair. They oversee the safe operation and troubleshooting of high voltage (HV) systems, proactively addressing issues to maintain continuous power plant operations.

Your scope of responsibility as Electrical Technician includes the following key duties:

  • Comply with Site Quality Procedures, Work Instructions, and EHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Diagnose systems and equipment problems.
  • Execute routine and non-routine maintenance activities in accordance with agreed procedures and operational requirements to ensure plant is operating safely, effectively, and efficiently.
  • Ensure safe working practices and procedures are adhered to within the work area.
  • Carry out first line maintenance activities, with response to emergency / unscheduled situations in the event of abnormal incidents to protect plant and personnel ensuring compliancy with safety and environmental policies.
  • Investigate complex technical problems relating to critical plant, identify, diagnose, and report defects within the plant utilising the Maintenance Management system.
  • Resolve defects whilst maintaining station performance and meeting operational targets by returning plant to normal operating service.
  • Manage work orders, risk assessment and method statements to safely control work.
  • Help in the production of sub-contractor work scopes.
  • Coordinate outage work scopes and packages.
  • Provide callout cover in the event of equipment failures.
  • Manage and supervise contractors to complete maintenance as required.
  • Preparing work method statements, risk assessment and / or plant operating instructions ensuring the required level of maintenance to asset is achieved and records maintained.
  • Prepare work orders, ordering spares, completing risk assessments and identification of resources.
  • Provides Service Support function to the Operations department and ensure defects and status of any maintenance activity is effectively communicated to the shift teams.
  • Support the delivery of low contracts, monitoring performance and review with direction and support of the E, C&I Engineer.

Any Other Reasonable Duties

  • Capable of carrying out the duties of an Authorised Person under the site safety rules.
  • Any other duties as directed by the EC&I Engineer as are deemed to be within his/her capabilities.

The Electrical Technician is responsible for the Health and Safety of him/her-self, any contractors working under his/her direction and in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Working Relationships

The Electrical Technician reports to the EC&I Engineer and may also take general direction from the Engineering Manager and plant management, as it relates to the safe and efficient operation of the plant and its associated processes.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). The power plant environment may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions. Some duties may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), which can include hard hats, safety glasses or other eye protection, respirators, or air masks, hearing protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), heat-resistant gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection.

Fitness for Duty

All employees participate in a Fitness for Duty Programme, which includes a post-offer medical assessment and substance screening. Ongoing random testing may be conducted post-employment.

Work Schedule

The Electrical Technician works a standard Monday to Friday day shift schedule, providing consistent plant operation and support during normal business hours. This position may occasionally require extended working hours and flexible shift arrangements, including weekends and bank holidays, in response to operational needs, workload demands, or plant conditions. Participation in a call out rota, to support plant operations is required.

Compensation

This position offers an annual base salary ranging from £45,000 to £55,000 and includes eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Professional Expertise & Qualifications

  • Recognised apprenticeship (electrical preferred) and at least 2 years of experience post apprenticeship within the Power Generation sector or similar heavy/process industry.
  • BTEC ONC/HNC or equivalent NVQ level (electrical preferred).
  • Experience maintaining electrical assets including motors, switchgear, transformers and other HV plant, UPS emergency power systems and electrical protection.
  • Strong Fault-finding skill on LV, MV and HV systems.
  • Ideally some experience/knowledge of modern Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Siemens S7 PLC’s, automatic fire detection systems, process control and various process instrumentation (temperature, pressure, flow).
  • Ideally an IOSH or NEBOSH qualification.
  • Conversant with the use of a Computerised Maintenance Management System.
  • Proven experience of Safe Systems of Work.
  • Good planning and co-ordination skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with others.
  • Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the business.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Attention to detail.
  • The highest regard for Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.
  • Must possess a valid and unrestricted United Kingdom driving licence, and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
