The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for safely performing all aspects of rolling stock maintenance to ensure equipment remains reliable, functional, and well maintained. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, and scheduled component replacements.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues on heavy equipment; perform necessary repairs and rebuilds.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists, hand tools, and appropriate equipment.
  • Interpret and follow service manuals, parts lists, and blueprints to complete maintenance and rebuild work.
  • Complete work orders and requisitions; maintain accurate equipment and cost records; identify and communicate when equipment should be shut down to prevent further damage or unsafe conditions.
  • Perform job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures and state and federal environmental regulations.

Other Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment as needed to diagnose issues.
  • Operate light vehicles to travel throughout the mine site.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience in equipment repair and maintenance, including the ability to read and interpret manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems, including engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems, and air conditioning.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to pass required written and practical assessments.
  • Ability to work rotating 12‑hour shifts in varying weather conditions.
  • Must pass Company Motor Vehicle Record check and Job Function Test.

Preferred

  • A two‑year mechanic degree or related field. Experience is a plus.

  • Occasionally (0‑1/3 of workday): Lift and carry 70 lbs. (tools and equipment), push and pull 80 lbs. (tool boxes, tools and equipment), grip 80 lbs. (using tools), pinch 15 lbs. (small nuts, bolts or wire), sitting, low level activity, elevated activity, and climbing.
  • Frequently (1/3 – 2/3 of workday): Lift and carry 50 lbs. (tools and equipment), push and pull 50 lbs. (tools and equipment), grip 40 lbs. (using tools), pinch 8 lbs. (small nuts, bolts or wire), hand coordination, bend and reach.
  • Continually (2/3‑3/3 of workday): Lift and carry 25 lbs. (tools and equipment), push and pull 25 lbs. (tools and equipment), grip 20 lbs. (using tools), pinch 4 lbs. (small nuts, bolts or wire), stand and walk (around the shop and while working on equipment).

NOTE: Must work rotating shifts, 80% indoor work, 20% outdoor work. Must be able to work while wearing required PPE including but not limited to Steel Toe Boots, Eye Safety Glasses, Hard Hat, Full Face Shield. Must be able to successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record check and Job Function Test.

Starting Salary: $51.08 (Hourly).
