The Group Lease Accountant (Methodology & Compliance) reports to the Group Lease Accounting Manager and acts as the Group's central subject matter expert for IFRS16 lease accounting policies, treatment decisions and compliance across the global lease portfolio. The role ensures lease classifications, measurements, remeasurements and other judgement‑based assessments are applied consistently and in accordance with Group policy.
Working closely with the Lease Accountant, Management Accountant, Lease Administrators and country finance teams, this role provides authoritative guidance, reviews complex cases, strengthens controls, and drives improvements in the quality, accuracy and compliance of lease data and reporting.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities- Provide technical guidance on IFRS16 methodology, including classification, measurement, lease term assessment, discount rates and treatment of amendments or extensions.
- Review complex lease agreements and determine the correct accounting treatment, ensuring consistent application of Group policy across countries and asset types.
- Review and approve lease agreement analysis activities performed within the team, including classification reviews, impact assessments and measurement checks.
- Support the Lease Accountant and Lease Administrators in resolving cases requiring judgement, interpretation of clauses or clarification of policy.
- Review the accuracy of lease calculations produced by the lease system of record and confirm compliance with IFRS16 and Group methodology.
- Review and approve lease‑specific updates such as rate changes, CPI reviews, rent‑free adjustments or other remeasurement triggers.
- Provide technical oversight of IFRS16 reporting outputs and support the review and socialisation of Group‑level IFRS16 results.
- Advise on risks, control gaps and compliance issues identified during lease processing or workflow reviews.
- Support the definition, maintenance and periodic update of IFRS16 accounting policies, guidance documents and standard operating procedures.
- Provide training, coaching and technical support to Lease Administrators, Lease Accountant and country finance teams on IFRS16 policy and compliance requirements.
- Support budgeting and forecasting activities by reviewing proposed lease treatments and identifying compliance considerations.
- Contribute to audit collaboration by preparing supporting documentation, responding to technical queries and ensuring decisions are properly evidenced.
- Identify and support implementation of methodology improvements, tooling enhancements and data quality initiatives that strengthen compliance and consistency.
- Strong technical knowledge of Lease Accounting and related standards, particularly IFRS16 and experience applying in a multi‑entity multi‑jurisdiction environment.
- Ability to interpret complex lease agreements and determine correct accounting treatments.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to review lease calculations and identify treatment issues.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills, able to explain technical matters clearly.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality, compliant outcomes.
- Ability to work collaboratively with operational teams and provide accessible technical support.
- Experience supporting audit processes or technical accounting reviews.
- Experience developing or maintaining accounting policies or SOPs.
- Experience with lease accounting tools (e.g., BDO Lead) and/or ERP systems (e.g., Oracle Fusion, SAP) is a strong advantage.
- Understanding of adjacent finance and other related processes (e.g., Property, Legal, AP, Tax, Treasury).
- Experience contributing to process improvements or transformation projects.
